1988 F150 w/302 dies after 20 minutes
Okay a buddy of mine has this 88 F150 that had been sitting for a few years and he decides to resurrect it and possibly sell it. We drained the tank and put fresh gas got it to fire up but it was backfiring and died. pulled the codes did some research and replaced TPS plugs wires rotor and the module on the side of the distributor who's proper name escapes me. she fires up like a champ first turn of the key left it running while we were talking and looking things over and then after about 10 minutes it booogs down and almost dies. I jumped in and tried to give it some fuel to keep it going and it back fires through the intake and dies. it was hard to start after that and wouldn't stay running. so we left it alone and come back the next day same thing once it gets warmed up after about 15 min at idle it dies. here's 2 videos of the truck one running at idle then dying
no additional codes show other than one for the egr but I can't see how the egr would kill the motor like that.
so again we have done a major tune up oil change fresh fuel throttle position sensor has been replaced oh and a new starter has gone into it, any expert ford folks got any useful information I would really love to hear from you. This is got me stumped.
Thankks a ton

Mine back fired through the intake like that and died like that. I have '94 302 E40D and to fix mine I ended up changing the EGR Solenoid then reset the codes and after I reset the codes it stopped doing that. I'd say Check your EGR with a vacuum gun and make sure it's holding vacuum and when you let off the vacuum you hear it let go in the Valve as well. Also check your Fuel Pressure Regulator make sure the Diaphragm isn't broken. Would run fine for me then out of nowhere start trying to die I would have to rev it up to keep it going then it would be fine again for a min or 2 after warm up then die again. That was my Experience. Btw the Solenoid is 2 bolts and it's very easy to change and cheap. Like ArmyofOne referred to your Fuel Filter. I just pulled mine off and blew through it to see if it was clogged but they're cheap as well to just change and easy. (need spring tool for fuel line.)

I've been having similar issues with my 87 F150 302 also. She sat for a while, last owner NOT the sharpest tool in the shed..Gave her a tuneup, Bypassed the Clutch safety switch, changed fuel filter, Oxygen sensor, good for a while. NOW, when it's hot out, She chokes, gots to give her gas to keep her from dying, etc. Been stuck a couple of times. keep a book under the seat, till she cools down. I recently heard there was a recall on the 87-88, due to metal fuel lines coming up from Fuel filter, NEAR the engine, that vapor lock. EXACTLY as i have experienced. Sure enough, metal lines on mine. Had similar with my 79 300 6 also, but she's another model. Anyone heard the same story about Vapor lock, fuel lines in these models?
