Question 2G to 3G Alternator Swap on 1992 4.9L

I had the alternator charge wire connector catch fire in my 1992 F150 4.9L (6-cyl) last weekend, which is apparently not that uncommon for 2G units. I have been looking around and decided to to a 3G upgrade using parts from RJM Injection Tech. The old hold-up that I have at this point is being sure what the clocking is for the mounting bracket/alternator. The alternator that I am looking at is (http://www.rjminjectiontech.com/coll...ducts/alt-7778) and it has three options of 4:00, 12:00, and 8:00. Does anyone know what the clocking is on the 1992 4.9L, 6-cylinder motor? Also, can anyone verify that the mounting format is 7" pivot?

Thanks!

Do you not have the old one. If not look it up on the auto zone web page. They have pics of the back for you.

You can clock the alternator if it's wrong.

Call them and ask to make sure but I'm thinking 12 o'clock long arm. the one that's in there should be 2 o'clock. The bracket has another hole at the top for alternative mount.

Here's my 3g install thread.

you want the 12:00 position, 8.25 spacing ear to ear,
a 1995 ford taurus with the 3.8l ohv engine has the exact 130 amp 3g you need for a direct swap.

Thanks for the info and the link to your thread. It was really helpful. I have had different opinions on the sizing and it looks like I will be able to do exactly what you did, so can you confirm that you used the 8.25"? Also, from the pics in your install thread it looks like you also bought a pulley from RJM. What size did you go with?

Thanks again!

Your welcome. It was the 8.25 (long ear) mounted at 12 and 6. I went with the stock pulley and the alt came with it installed. There was some discussion in my thread about under driving the pulley and it didn't seem a good option based on that discussion.

There are alot of guys on here that advocate a junkyard alternator and to them it is correct based on costs. For me I liked RJMs warranty which is a year but I can bet that guy is going to back his product way out into the future, additionally the ease of harness install was a no brainer that addresses every bit of it. Plus it was a 160a alt vs the 130a from the yard. And... his price is not out of line for brand new stuff.

If I did this swap I would buy a lifetime from AutoZone. I already have a lifetime 2g though.
