Default changing gear ratio to get better mpg

i just checked out my rear gear code. i have 3.08's. my truck is a 92 4x4 5spd and im running 33x12.50. so the question is if i change my gears to 3.73's will it help me get better mpg?

I think you'll need 2.73 gears?

In town it might get better because the engine won't have to work as hard to get you moving. On the highway it would probably hurt mpg. Just a guess.

It's going to help your city mileage and hurt your highway mileage.

It'll make the tires much easier to get rolling (I have 3.08s and 31s... I can't imagine what a slug you have) so in the city you'll be over much less strain. Down the highway your RPMs are going to be a little higher so you may lose 1-2mpg up there. Overall, you'll probably see your combined mileage come up a little

I had 3.55s with 31s. I figured I needed 32s or 33s to bring the RPMs where I wanted them. Then that rear went out and I put one in with 3.08s. I switched to 235/75s to bring the RPMs where I wanted them.

thanks yall for a little insight on this. I may go ahead and change the gears out and see what happens and if its bad ill just swap them back. and no the truck is not a slug with 33's and 3.08 gears. but a big thanks again yall.

Click on this link, it will give you a better understanding of what's happening with your tire size and gearset.

Based on the info in the chart, I'd say your best bet is 4.11 gears to go with your 33's
