I don't think the 6.4 ever had the widespread problems that the 6.0 had (the significant majority of 6.0 owners I know had problems!), but the 6.4 wasn't problem free from everything I've heard. You couldn't have talked me in to buying a Ford diesel until the 6.7 came out, and even then, only maybe!

Good luck!

I agree. My neighbor bought a 2011 6.7, so I'm waiting to see if he has any serious issues. So far he likes it. Only problem has been a leaky radiator. That and he ran low on DEF and the truck stopped running, but that's operator error. It's that $55-60,000 sticker that kills me!!

Thanks again for the input guys.

If you tow a lot you are going to hate the 5.0 compared to your old 6.0.

My brother did something similar. He traded in his '06 f-250 6.0 diesel on a 2014 f-250 gas. He tows for work and also has a 5th wheel camper and hated the lack of trq. He just traded the f-250 in and got a f-350 diesel.

The shifts of the new 6spd transmission really make the towing with the 5.0 very pleasant and while it does rev more than the eco, it is also not as prone to overheating on long steep grades at high temps. The eco is a beast for sure, but it also has its issues, chief among them is high heat generated by turbos and fuel dilution due to direct injection.

You will find the 5.0 to do just fine with your load.

This is my truck and trailer hooked up and ready to go.

Wish the spread was mine lol. It belongs to our horse trainer. We board our two horses there, and are out the 5 days a week most weeks at least if not 7. He does let us keep the trailer there so he can use it when he does not need his big one.

Just last week I traded my 2012 F-150 Ecoboost for a 2012 F-250 6.7L Power Stroke with 55,000 miles on it. I was sure to review all the service records on the truck, and didn't see where the previous owner had any problems with it. Checking diesel forums, it appears problems with the 6.7L Power Stroke are sporadic at worst. The F-250 runs like brand new, but was $15-20K less than brand new. I have nothing but good things to say about the Ecoboost. It pulled my 8,000 pound camper very well. With the heavy tonque weight plus passengers and gear, I know I was overloading my F-150.

I went from old school diesel (IDI) to my 5.0, i had a Silverado with a 6.5 which everyone rates just behind the 'Stroke 6.0. My truck was about as built as you'd want with a stock crank (holset turbo, big injectors, tune, intake, drilled out IP fittings and so on).
I really do miss my old truck performance wise, however i do not miss any diesel maintenance.
My truck is the FX4 with the 5.0, so it has 3.73 gears. It did good before the spacer lift and heavy load range E tires, but that sucked some power out of it. Thinking about a tune down the road. By far the best gas truck ive owned.
Towed a few boats and small trailers with it so far.

If you don't mind, what was the damage on that Super Duty?? Out here in the Circus known as Kalifornia, they are running in the mid to upper 40's with 30-60k miles. Just curious? Congrats on the F250 too!!!

Mine was $36K. It's a XLT crew cab with the FX4 package, chrome package, fifth wheel/gooseneck prep. The few late model super duty trucks with less than 60K miles and in good condition that I've found in this area run in the lower to mid 40's. I found mine at a local Ford dealership. After inspecting/driving the truck and reviewing the history report, I was on it! I've been looking over a year to find a late model super duty diesel in good condition, less than 60K miles, for a price in the mid 30's. It was a rare find and I'm glad I didn't hesitate.
