I also had the same issue over the weekend towing our camper. Even when we used the manual override the gain control doesn't light up sometimes, my truck was built in early December. I notice it happens when starting the truck, trailer disconnected then wire fault message.

Push back on the dealer. There is something else in your truck damaging the TBC. That is assuming the trailer is OK and I am guessing it is. The TBC's do work in the F-150's. Mine seems to work fine. Others on this forum have good working TBC's as well. Really sounds like a Ford problem. It would be a shame to have to go to an external TBC because the factory installed unit in your brand new truck doesn't work.

Hi ,

I came across this thread because the TBC on my 2015 platinum has given up the ghost and I'm stuck 1000 miles from home with a 16' tandem trailer. Fortunately I made it across the Blue ridge Mtns before it quit. I did noticed it "winked out" for just a second while going down the highway but it corrected itself and later when I stopped, the trailer brakes wouldn't release. The local dealer is telling me the correct replacement is on back order for several weeks, and As nice as southerners are I can't afford to be stuck waiting on a part. The dealer wants to put on an aftermarket controller that will allow me to get home. I'm not real keen on adding aftermarket parts to my $60,000 truck but I don't seem to have any other options. Had the brakes failed earlier the results could be bad.
This definitely needs to be a recall item.

Hi Brent

I feel your pain and thats awful.

As an update to my situation my truck has essentially been at the dealer for the last 2 weeks while the mechanic works with the tech hotline. I am not upset by that since the service manager and the tech are taking the issue seriously and eliminating all issues. It seems as if Ford has recognized this is an issue and after multiple failures I am excited that someone is digging deeper. I would do the aftermarket to get home.

I will keep updating when I get more info but my fingers are crossed and my truck may yet have an aftermarket controller.

If the dealer or ford is paying for it get a aftermarket one install temporarily for now, get it fixed when you get home.

Has anybody had this problem on a 2016? I just bought a 2016 Platinum to tow my enclosed car hauler. I haven't hooked it up yet but am concerned about all these failed TBC's an having the trailer brakes lock up at the wrong time or go up in smoke.

I have an update that might be helpful to anyone suffering from this issue. I won't pretend to be even remotely mechanical but the dealer is confident they found my issue. I will explain as best I can here but asked to speak with the tech so I can post better info here in hopes it helps someone else.

I got a tech and service manager who took the problem seriously and in my opinion went out of their way to solve it. I am appreciative. Disclaimer - I have yet to tow anything yet but they said they are 99.9% certain the solved it.

The TBC was failing as we all know and after almost a month of back and forth between the dealer tech and the tech hotline they discovered it was another module (trailer tow module?) that was sending voltage to the TBC when it shouldn't have. So yes the TBC was failing but that wasn't the issue and was only the point of failure. I literally just picked my truck up Friday afternoon and the tech was gone but they think they found the root of the issue.

Lots of people on the forum and elsewhere immediately went to the trailer as being the issue but after a day or so the dealer said they were getting voltage even when the trailer wasn't plugged in. They eliminated the issue of the trailer. Next there was a splice because of my canopy, they eliminated that. Once that was done it was escalated with the tech hotline and I basically let them keep my truck as long as they needed it to solve the problem. I figured an extra day or week now would save me downtime in the future. I will call the dealer on Monday and get the part number that was replaced and hopefully everyone else can try the same. I am cautiously optimistic.

There are very technical people on the forum and hopefully once I have a bit of info they can expand on what might need to be done with your truck. Here's hoping!

Looking forward to hearing what they found. I am not getting any voltage out and just changed my 7 way plug for a new Hopkins. Hoping this solves my disconnect issue.

I think (maybe) there is a catch 22 here, the lack of voltage might be a truck wiring problem (as I had) but my understanding (?) of the trailer wiring circuit is that there is no voltage until the trailer control module recognizes the trailer (software). So catch 22.

I am not getting power out when brakes aren't being applied. I honesty believe I had a bad 7way plug. Switch out the two prong plug for the new blade version which seems to be the industry standard.
