I was hoping the EB would be a good compromise.
What was the 5.0 in the shop for?

here are additional posts. Turned out to be a transmission issue. Whatever they did to it fixed it because I never had another issue. They said it was a pinched wire in the transmission.

I have 2013 ecoboost with the heavy duty payload package & max tow. I have had it tuned since 11k miles & it now has almost 70k. I've owned many diesels in the past & have to say I am thoroughly impressed with how well it tows. I've had over 12 behind it on a trip of over 400 miles going from Seattle to north idaho & it handled it with no problem although it did get only 7 mpg cruising the whole way at 65mph... Some people have had bad experiences but I've abused this truck & so far no issues except for a torn diaphram in the blow off valve that I replaced last week.

I do lot's of cross country towing for my hobby and have been for years. Mostly tow in the 5000 pound range.

My 2014 F150 XLT has the 5.0 with 3.55 ratio and tow package. It does a fair job of towing. So far no overheating up steep grades in 100F + temps and does fine in below 0F weather.

Noting special and by far not the best tow vehicle I have owned but its doing the job and plan to keep it a few more years provide it does not require a ton of time in the shop.

I pull a 3H Gooseneck Horse Trailer with my 5.0, and love how it pulls. We are at or near max rated tow and payload every time, and the truck is a beast, that feels very under rated. I have pulled long 6 and 7% grades at speed in summer heat with no issues at all. It dropped to 4th and chugged along maintaining speed of 70mph and doing its job.

The Eco is a great motor too. I just prefer to keep the V8 for me. I think, and the numbers bear it out that they keep the 5.0 numbers down, just to make sure they sell more ecoboosts. I don't blame Ford for that, as a business owner, I understand their position. They somewhat rectified it this year by upping the 5.0 tow rating to over 11k in some models, which finally gets it to where the weaker 5.4 was in 2010.

If I had the money and the means, I would love to put the 3.73 5.0 through the tow rating tests at same max weight as the eco, and just see what happens. I am sure the eco would outperform it, but I bet it would pass the new standard.

I think it's interesting that there is such a discussion about towing. When you consider that 25 years ago folks were towing with at least 100 hp less and torque values that are 75-100 ft/lbs of torque less, we live in amazing times. All of the engines offered today are beasts. The new hp and tq ratings on the 5.0 are outstanding and would have been the envy of any truck owner just a few years ago. The Ecos have revolutionized torque, hp, and efficiency when not under load, and are simply amazing when under load. And the sorely missed 6.2... well, I just wish it was still available.

I'm just happy to have the ability to select 4 amazing engines that can do any job that a person needs a 1/2 ton truck to do.
