My SOLO 4" EB Catback Install & Review
#21
Could be a dumb question, but could you run a resonator(cylinderical style) or a muffler vs a resonator only to replace the j-pipe at all? I don't have my 2012 FX4 yet so I can't comment on how much room the j-pipe eats up. I am sure there is still plenty of room I just wanted to ask.
Hopefully someone local to me gets a system so I can hear it at part throttle and WOT. Sounds nice at idle in that video and looks like a great system.

You could run a resonator or muffler yes, but Solo has already done the work for you to remove ALL the drone by using this very simple J pipe. There is more than enough room for it and all it does and is there for is removal of drone / sound resonance.
If for some strange reason you remove it and then add something else later, you not only incur that expense, but take the risk of getting drone as this entire system is designed with the mindset of the J pipe already being there. You could be opening up a whole huge can of worms there without knowing it.
The system works, there is no drone, and it fits without issue. No need to change it in my opinion

With that said then how will the system be effected when we start running larger down pipes with single high flow cats vs the factory setup? I am assuming with increased flow through their catback that will alter the frequency and could induce drone as well correct?

The j pipe is adjustable at the end where the cap is. There is like 3"-4" of adjustment there. I can't see why you shouldn't be able to fine tune it for future changes, if they actually change anything.

In the local G8 club here in Austin there were two other people that the exact same exhaust that I did but without the headers. Their J pipes were in the same place as mine and still no drone. I had SIGNIFICANTLY free'd up the exhaust and there was still no drone.
If and when you add other mods down the line to the exhaust, I wouldn't be worried about drone in the slightest.

This doesn't answer your dyno question as I have not dynoed mine, but I did promise I would do quick write-up after I installed my SOLO MR400.
I received the system in less than a week after ordering it, packaged extremely well with a free SOLO Performance T-shirt. The system was a work of art, it was so shiney and well-madeI felt like I needed to wear white gloves when I handled it, especially the resonator and the exhaust tip. The entire install took me about two hours. That is everything from unpackaging the exhaust, to jacking up the truck, removal of the old exhaust, and install. Not too bad considering I have no experience and I did it completly on my own.
I was able to remove my old system without cutting or damaging it using only two Craftsman jack stands at the rear axel. This SOLO system installed very nicely, very tight and secure. I could immediately tell it was installed correctly as it is made to very tight tolerances and snugs up nicely into the hangars.
I didn't test drive it yet, but I cranked it up and noticed the deep rumbly growl right away, and the turbo whistle was more pronounced. It was loud at initial start up, but as the engine idled down it became a mellow low rumble.
Overall I am very impressed. I'll give some driving impressions later as I get some time behind the wheel. The truck has its own sound now, not a V-8 and not an import coupe, but like a sportier more agressive ecoboost.
