Default how are the 3.7 V6 2013 F150's more capable than previous years?

glancing and playing around my facebook page i played around with the new model f150 specs and changes. and i absolutely couldn't help but to find out that the current year f150 are more capable of towing than the previously years.

it states that the new model can tow 6700lbs compared to the previous 6100lbs, of course which is in a 4x2 single cab with a tow package. then my current model thats a supercrew with a tow package is 5700lbs and the new tow rating for it is 6300. i know its only 600lbs and all but that much weight can mean the difference between people wanting to get a trailer and towing a certain car or not.

now what could possibly be the difference? the engine specs are the same. NOW, if its just something to do with the suspension then it'll make sense. whenever i hook up even just my 16 flat bed on there, i can already see the back of my truck sag. i mean, my flat bed has a short front to it, however i do have about 135lbs of added tongue weight due to a winch, box, battery, solar panel, and a few other towing items in the box. now with the added tongue weight with the car on there, even with my weight disto hitch, the car still sags some to where its somewhat noticable.

it might time to add a leaf spring or get some air bags in the back.

yesterday i went out to the track towing my 3500 race car on my trailer which is 1800lbs with all the added weight to it and thats about 5300lbs i'm towing. with a tuned 3.7 i can say it tows that weight like it suppose to and i really don't feel its really struggling. and since i use tow haul mode and a tune, it likes to hold 3000rpms while accelerating which is nice. before mike at five star updated the 87 tune, it would hold 2500rpms which still really did a good job. stock tune only likes to hold a 2200rpms.

when i'm TDY i always tell myself that someday i'll just get a diesel and never worry about towing weights. but i'll never tow something heavier than my trailer with my mustang on top. now if i towed 5300lbs on a regular bases then i might start thinking i should of gotten the 6.2 or EB motor. but i am only towing once or twice a month. and since i live in CA, i only tow at a maximum of 60mph. i still however wish when i was in the market that a XLT EB model was available at the dealer. but i got what i got and i'm dealing with it nicely though.

300hp was enough to tow 10 000# just a few years ago, (with the 5.4) I'm sure that is part of it.
Or they are trying to compete on paper with the new (8 speed) Dodge.

I've said it all long, I think they sandbag certain ratings, make it just high enough to beat the competition, that way when the competition surpasses it, you can up your rating without changing anything.

Even when the new SAE testing hits, they will still do this...all the testing says is the maximum they can list, nothing says they can't list a lower number for now.

this makes sense to me, however i still think the leaf springs in the back are soft compared to the other max tow packages. gonna need air bags or leaf spring helper. and i'm already using WDH already to be crying out loud.

It was not just the HP that allowed the 5.4L to tow more weight, it was mainly it's 365lb-ft of torque @ 3,500rpm.

I found an article online talking about this. The reason ford did this was to stay ahead of the new ram 1500 3.6 pentastar. The ram V6 has a max tow rating of 6600 lbs so ford came out and said as of 2013 the 3.7 can tow 6700 lbs. Kind of like how the old 5.4 could tow 200 lbs more than the much more powerful hemi.

you guys will be amazed how much just changing shift points in tow/haul mode does to the truck!
