What is best the 5.0 or EcoBoost in a F150 hauling a trailer?

OP, I will let you come to your own conclusions based on the dyno comparison of each motor below.

They both work well - I pull with mine every week, and I have the 5.0 with 3.55 gears.

The ecoboost has 5 more hp, more torque, and a flatter torque curve, which means great towing, but costs you mileage. If you read through the forum you'll be astounded at how the mileage changes when you start towing.

5.0 all the way.

OP, since mileage is being brought up I might as well nip that one in the bud too. Here is a link of the only real world test of the multiple trucks towing the same trailer (besides the Tacoma) on the same route. As I have said, it is the ONLY test that I know of that used the same trailers, with the same weight, on the same route. Not comparing the fuel mileage of forum posts where totally different trailer, weights, routes, speeds, and who knows what else was being used.

Also, if you are going to compare the two on mileage then make sure your compare the right configurations based on their capabilities. You wouldn't want to compare an EB 3.73 that has the capability to tow 11,300 lbs to a 5.0L 3.73 that only can tow 9,400 lbs where a EB 3.31 is comparable.

All tow ratings are in a Screw SWB 2wd
EB 3.15 (8,500 lbs) compares to a 5.0L in a 3.55 and 3.31 (both are 8,000 lbs)
EB 3.31 (9,400 lbs) compares to a 5.0L 3.73 (9,400 lbs)
EB 3.55 (9,800 lbs) -- 5.0L has nothing to compare this to --6.2L 3.55 (9,800 lbs)
EB 3.73 (11,300 lbs) -- 5.0L has nothing to compare this to -- 6.2L 3.73 (11,300 lbs)

Hey Al,

Good point on the different axle ratios having comparable tow ratings. Explains why many people don't get the mileage they expect out of the Eco. My 5.0 has 3.55s, so technically I'd compare that to a 3.15 Eco, which "should" have the same capabilities with more MPG.

Never thought about that.

Nice chart, it is a good comparison of the trucks. It seems that when you get into the throttle with all these trucks they all drink fuel at around 11 mpg's towing..(minus the ecodiesel, good #'s for that truck towing/empty.)

Good chart but it compared a 5.0 4x4 with an Eco 2wd. So, not really an accurate comparison. Most with Ecos pulling a heavy load report single digit mileage.

That said, it pulls strong. But both do.

Interesting differences between the Chevy and GMC. Identical trucks. Must be different hearing.

The Eco will tow at a lower RPM that the Coyote, but they are designed differently. Both are capable of pulling more than they are rated for. The ratings have more to do with a suspension and hitch package than the engine. Fired just pairs the Maxtow package with the more expensive engine. That's a profit thing. Nothing more.

Whichever engine you choose, you'll be happy. I love my 5.0 as do most. Eco owners mostly love their engine too.

Both are better options than anything from a different manufacturer.
