What's it cost to install the block heater?

THANKS everyone else for all your responses!!

Block heater should be about 150$... Just my guess and it is very good for your truck long term. Yes it will start without it but when it Alaska cold, the oil becomes like molasses, warming it preserve your engine long term.

Good luck

Put an electric heater pad on the bottom of the oil pan instead of going the block heater route. More effective and cheaper. As mentioned, Canadian-spec trucks c/w a BH, but if I had to add some sort of auxiliary heat source, I'd go with the pad heater.

Cost for the block heater is cheap...You can get an oil pan heater and install it yourself for less than $40. BUT, if your moving to Fairbanks, your going to want more than just a block heater (battery heater and coolant tank heater). Anchorage only gets to -20F or so during the winter, Fairbanks gets real cold! My suggestion, just take it to the dealer, spend the $300 to get it done right, and never worry about it again...

I've used a "oil pan pad style heater" up here on my f250, it worked fine. But I can't stress enough that you are going to need a battery blanket also or your battery will gel up and die when it gets real cold in Fairbanks.

Oh yeah, get yourself a copy of "The Milepost", it is a Annually published book that tells you what about EVERYTHING on the Alcan, like gas, lodging, food, distance to next community, where to watch out for wildlife on the road ( you will see a bunch, and it will be in the middle of the road!).

Thanks for all the info waterboy. I already picked up a copy of the new Milepost and I'll probably take your advice on getting a dealer to winterize my truck and both my SUVs.

My last piece of advice for ANYONE driving the Alcan...Don't bring firearms! You are "allowed" to transport long rifles and shotguns with the proper paperwork and fees AND permission....big pain in the ***** though, just use a FFL dealer to ship your firearms to your destination (it's about the same cost). Whatever you do don't try to "sneak" them through...been there, done that, got caught, had my truck siezed, paid a civil fine of $1500 (cause they were nice to me), got my truck back, and couldn't continue on the trip for a day.....could've been much worse had they chose to prosecucute me for a criminal offense.

Good advice...I've been debating with myself over what I should do with my guns. I can ship them with my household goods if I remove firing pins but not sure I like that idea.
