Yes they were after market A arms.....stock A arms you cannot put just the joint in it. That's what I was saying if the OP had after market A arms (there will be a C clip or Circlip around the bottom of the joint itself) he could change JUST the ball joint.

even in cali you cant hammer those things out, you would bend the upper a-arm before you would get that bj out, thats why they make bj presses that you can pick up at harbor freight for a reasonable price

Default Moog has

an upper ball joint available for the press in arms. It's part number is K80014T. (The "T" may not be necessary, depends on your auto parts dealer). It requires a ball joint press to install.
