Do 2001's fit into this conversation. I have 5.4 and I changed plugs about year and half ago. I don['t drive it as much as I use to cause I retired 3 years ago. Im going to put new ones in this week when I change out anti-freeze. I probably only have put about 6,000 on truck since I changed them. Don't do long trips much anymore.

Mine is a 2001 5.4 What is the reason for you to want to change out plugs that only have about 6,000 miles on them when they should last about 100,000 miles?

Default Plugs

Well, I figured since I'm retired, 66, this would be the last time for me to replace them. I'd rather do it now when Im able then to wait for another couple years and then do it. I guess if they are good for at least 50,000 they probably will last long enough for me then. Thank you for input.

People have left them in there longer, but it's hell on the engine.

Yea, the gap increases, a ton of carbon will build depending upon how long you screw your engine over. It won't run near as good as it should be. Yea, some people shouldn't own nice things. The things that call for a little maintenance. Age is no excuse...common.

Well slap me silly and call me stupid!
Articles, advertisements, etc. say stock platinum plugs go 100,000 miles before needing replacement and I believed it all. We bought my wife's '03 4.6 Expedition new and it hit that mark before a couple of coils went bad. Ran great until then. I replaced coils and plugs at that time.

Yea, neglected plugs are hard on coils as well. Well, don't beat yourself up to bad, - your not the first to fall for all that hype.

I think as soon as it gets warm again Im going to replace the plugs even thou they only have about 7,000 miles on them. It is just like the oil, I change it every three months no matter how much I drive and fuel filter when I change oil and tranny filter and fluid twice year just to keep it clean and fresh.

You don't need to, infact that's time and money wasted since we have air tight systems in these engine and transmissions. The lub in the crank and trans will eventually break down, but not from sitting and not in our lifetime anyway. Not like the old push rod motors. Just go by use. I use to think the same damn way tho lol.

Plugs every 7000 ? Now your sounding ate up.
