Judging by you saying the fluid was as black as motor oil....rebuilt it lol. Especially if it's fine now. Transmission fluid would only be that black if it was overheated badly, and if it was overheated that much it would have smoked most of the parts

Mine goes through the radiator, AND it has a factory external cooler. My truck has the HD cooling package, and IIRC, my setup was part of that package.

Same here, - the only mods I've seen was replacing the trans cooler w/larger one. Mounts real close to factory.

Yep. When the radiator tranny cooler begins leaking, the connectors seize up or get stripped or there is a hole/crack in the line. It's cheaper to install an aftermarket cooler than replace the whole radiator. If installed correctly they actually cool better.

Has there been a tow package installed? Vehicles with the factory installed tow package have an upgraded cooling system. If a hitch was added later the system should also be upgraded including the tranny cooler.
Newer trucks (I believe Ford began doing this in '05-'06) have a factory installed cooling system upgrade so a hitch can be added later on. My dearly departed 2011 had a separate cooler that was plumed into the radiator cooler that was all marked Ford. I installed the hitch...6 months before I was rear ended and it was totaled out.

I have all the parts to do this just need the design I want and the time. However I am going 1 step further and adding a remote filter kit as well. ill see if I can find the link for it but it just adds a spin on filter to the transmission adding additional filtration and a tiny bit more fluid into it. Ill be sure to make a thread on it when I get the time. But I was planning on cutting it off of the radiator then adding in the additional trans cooler after the aux stock one, then through the remote filter and back into the trans. just need to find a point I can mount the remote filter housing to the inside of the frame. Am also gonna need a line flaring tool. or I might be able to get away with double clamping the lines. But I myself have intentions of doing this as well. really not to hard either.
