Angry Front wheels barely turn by hand

I posted on another Ford site and figured this might be better.

2001 F150 SCrew Lariat, 5.4L, 4R70W
4x4 electronic shift on the fly
139,000

While doing some PM (brakes were squeaking a bit), I jacked her up in the middle of the front (cross member area). While working, I noticed that spinning the front wheels by hand just wasn't happening. I took off the caliper to ensure there was no drag. No changes. they move and you can spin them, but they won't freewheel more than a few inches.

Front axle of course spins with the tire, my understanding is that this year's setup is supposed to do that.

Truck was off and in park, 4x4 selector switch in 2H.
When on the road, and you switch to 4HI, you feel it engage and the sound while traveling does change so I don't think it is either of the two solenoids on the firewall.

My understanding is that the wheels should spin fairly freely...I also read that when jacking the truck up the front axles could be binding.

I'm at a loss at this point.

Hubs and front diff fluid changed last year. No other issues with this truck other than the 13.7 MPG she gets me.

Thanks.

When you have it jacked up and are able to move them a little is the driveshaft turning? Are both wheels moving together?

They won't free spin but they should make a few rotations. I tow more than the average Joe too. I think on my last tank I had 1000 lbs minimum behind my truck for 90 miles or so.

Anything in the 13-14 zone isn't awful at all.

Tomorrow when I get off work I'm going to jack mine up and see what happens and I'll let you know what I find.

Disc Brake don't have spring to retract the pads away from the rotor. Only the rubber boot in the sliding pin push the pad when brakes are not applied. Install a Brake Pad Drag Reduction Clip.

Use MoS2 Dry Lube Spray instead of Brake Grease that can wash out , contaminate the pad/rotor, swells rubber/seal and collects dust.

MoS2 is a grease-free dry lubricant with pressure and temperature resistance from -185°C (-301°F) to +400°C (752°F). The layer repels dust, dirt and water, resists oils, greases and many chemicals and adheres to metals, plastics and wood surfaces.

Thanks but as I said, I even removed the rotor with no change.

I see where you took the caliper off, not the rotor, take the caliper back off and
make sure the pads are loose in the mounts

sorry. let me add that I took the caliper off, took the pads off, cleaned them good and very very lightly lubed with the green permatex synthetic grease.

they slide in and out smoothly.

when I did the hubs last year, anything there may be binding?

thanks all.
