Ive got a 2008 4.6, and when mine was brand new back in Oct, it was fairly quiet. Only at a cold start it is loud, and then idles at a low decibel. And has a nice roar when gettin on it. With the K&N cold air kit, its still fairly quiet until I get on it. Dunno?

sometimes if you dont grease the muffler bearings they start to rattle and could possibly misinterpreted as a "roar". just give them 3 or 4 pumps with the old grease gun, should make them nice and silent for ya.

I had to laugh at a number of responses to this thread, but this one I love! Clearly this site is populated to a high degree by kids or rednecks that like loud trucks. Like the OP, I want my vehicle as quiet a possible. It has always bugged me with all of my trucks that even passing someone they sound like I am blowing the damned thing up. Anything over 3,000 RPMs make me feel like I am abusing it. Cars (i.e. old people sedans) tend to do 5,000 or more RPMs before you even know about it they run so smooth. If I could make my truck as quiet as a caddy without losing too much power (or lighten the billfold too much) I would gladly do so. In the meantime I still get entertained by reading about folks wanting their nice new trucks to roar, racing their trucks like they are sports cars, putting wings on the back like any good ricer, pretending to have the next big foot, or playing music so loud it vibrates other peoples' trucks three lanes away. Then I remember 35 years ago when I too was a 17 year old racing around in my 4 cyl. Mustang II like it was a 'vette with dual CB radio 4' whips on the back with lots o' hacked in speakers attached to that big old honking 8 track player hanging under the dash... and realized how much dad was laughing at me too

Yea, while my age may agree with you as to keeping the sound to a decent level, it's also what makes the sport and hobby of wrenching so great. Each of us has their own taste, and as long as we are not harming others, then I say to each his/her own.
I however still cannot figure out what shop would place as many mufflers/glasspacks to a stock muffler system to quiet it down as the original poster said he had done. I've never heard of such a thing. I also wonder if he's refering to the fan "roar" we all hear when the engine is cold and idling. Once the engine and idle RPM's drop, it quiets right down for my "old fart" ears. I also installed a turbo muffler to get it to breath a little better, along with the K&N air box. Not noisy at all.
