Default My 2004 5.4 idle.

Is it normal with that model motor to idle with a ticking noise almost like a diesel? My friend has a 05 f250 with the 5.4 and his does the same. Can I get some input if that is normal or not normal?

Yes... it's a normal sound when your VTC's are starting to fail

Default tick gone

2006 FORD F150 FX4
i bought my truck with 115k it has 179k right now, i had the tick for about two years, mechanics told me cam phasers, tensioners, blah blah, the tick was real loud, i paid mechanic to do spark plug change and the tick came shortly after that and gas smell would come and go. two years went by with the tick, i decided to do the plugs myself only to discover that mechanic did driver's side plugs as the originals on passenger side were all there. explains why my driver fender was only scuffed not the passenger. turns out, cylinder #4 spark plug was fouled really bad, electrode was sliding up and down, so no gap, i changed out the plug and coil on #4, no more tick. apparently, from what i've read, not enough air circulation or it's just plain too hot back up in there and plugs go quicker, makes sense to me. it's the most difficult plug to get to in my opinion.

recently, i've had my truck die at idle after an alarm install which i thought unusual. i had alarm removed, still died. changed all coil plugs, still died when coming to a slow stop at idle, it would start back up, i would have to kick into neutral and it would fire right up. i changed throttle body, plugs, cops, fuel module all within the past year as preventive and thought it was really odd that all of a sudden after an alarm install that it started to stall at idle while in drive at stop lights. well, i thought it was gng to be my fuel pump, then i thought it was my throttle body since it only did it at idle and the iac valve is built into tb. i changed out to my old tb i had laying around and still it would stall. anyhow, i changed the evap purge valve solenoid and reset ecu after exhausting internet searches and bam, no more stalling!!!!!! so far so good, it idles better. fingers crossed. btw, no codes were thrown.
