Used parts to replace used parts. Now, if the used parts are in worse shape then yes, it needs to be changed. And a incorrect mirror, obviously needs to be swapped. We guarantee the parts we install for as long as you own the vehicle. Congrats on the child! Just looking to give the other side of coin.
Not judging but does your body shop profit from using "used" parts? Seems like it would be hard to give an estimate not knowing if used parts are available.

We make a profit on every part. New or used. Used parts are marked up, and new parts we receive a discount from the OEM's.

It works like this...

We are direct repair for State Farm and Hanover/Citizens. Which means, I write an estimate based on their requirements. State Farm won't use aftermarket parts, but REQUIRES us to use USED parts when available, then go OEM. So, I check a few sources, get prices, put together the estimate, send it to SF and start working on the vehicle. No insurance adjuster is needed.

If we are not direct repair, the adjuster writes the estimate, and we work off of their estimate.

We always put the quoted parts on the car. If I tell you I am using a USED part, you get a used part. Never do I quote for OEM, and use USED. Thats fraud.

yep...that's exactly how it work's.. But, your repair needs to look new when done. not a scratched up mirror..

Thanks. Didn't know that so I learned something. I personally would rather have a used OEM part than a Chinese made aftermarket.

small update.

They are searching their used database for the proper mirror which I'm 99% sure they aren't going to find one because of the auto dim feature.

Once that search comes up empty they will search for after market parts. Which again I'm sure will come up empty again because of the auto dim feature. I have yet to see an after market auto dim mirror for our trucks anywhere.

Once that fails then new OEM parts will be used.

Have any of you guys ever seen an after market mirror with the auto dim feature??

Here's what I'm hoping I might be able to pull off, I have a very good feeling this is going to OEM new parts because of the auto dim feature. I've wanted tow mirrors for a long time, so I'm hoping I'll be able to talk them into putting on a set of tow mirrors from 1A Auto seeing they would be cheaper then the OEM parts. Think the insurance company would go for that seeing its cheaper or do you think they'll tell me to go **** myself??

Fairbanks will have to weigh in on that one since he owns a body shop. Last time I was in a accident I was rear ended. I was extremely particular since it was someone else's fault. I don't see why you can't demand OEM parts. That's what was damaged so that's what I would want back. I'm actually surprised they repaired the door instead of a new door skin. I hate bondo because if the person doing it isn't really good it stands out bad. I see vehicles on the street all the time with patches of bondo. I cringe. I went to body school when I was a youngster so I look for those things. But I'm sure lots have changed since then.

I am sure they are only going to find a OEM. If you want to do aftermarket mirrors, I'd let them know asap. From experience, nothing pisses you off more then busting your *** to make the customer happy, to only have them change their mind last minute. We have done stuff like that in the pass. As long as we get enough money to cover it, we don't mind.

I never saw a picture of the damage, sometimes, putting a skin on is best, but not always cost effective. And yes, quality bodymen make repaired panels useable.

Wow, I'd think this repair shop will get into trouble for using used parts to make an insurance repair claim. Check with your insurance adjuster to make sure this is not allowed before you head over to the shop to blow off at them. At the very least, you would be intitled to a mirror that has all the options the damaged one had.
I'm searching instead of making a post about a silly question...so here I am.

My passenger's side mirror (power, turn signal, NO heat) was whacked by a trash truck and I can't find an exact replacement on Ebay. If I buy one that HAS heat, will it install and work just fine, but just not have any heat? I'm just trying to avoid buying a part and having it not fit or something.
