Short trips will cause more fuel dilution. A UOA is a cheap way to know your TBN/TAN ratio along with fuel and will be able to narrow things down for you. We can all sit here and guess what is the right interval, but with the UOA you can nail things down for sure.

You know im not knocking your ase ford certified mechanic stuff but heres a lil info you all may want to know.... Run 5w30!!! Hell in my 02 stang gt i was running rotella t6 full syn 5w40! and im with the other guy ive heRd too frequent is actually bad... I do mine bout 5,000 miles... My gt had 149,000 when i got rid of it an it ran STRONG... 5w20 is too thin and was just to meat emission standards this was actually from a ford engineer or something this was said on one of the mustang forums its true info whether or not people believe me or not is up to all of you but i know what i will be running in my 4.6... An to those of you with high mileage trucks doing the rotella change ... Change your oil filter after bout 1,500 miles since the oil has lots of detergents and will be cleaning out sludge in your motor...

I have heard of this and I run a lot of stop and go traffic and I off road a lot in deeper stuff so I may think about going to a 5W30 I run race oil in the mustang but change it once a year so its ok! I may run 5W20 in winter and 5-30 in summer but who knows great info though! Not sure about the 5W40 seems a little thick! I run a oil engine cleaner through the engine thats sold through ford and it cleans a lot out!

I think to meant to "meet" CAFE standards. That is the main drive behind lower viscosity oils. HOWEVER, wear numbers can be the same or better with several viscosity choices. The data we have shows really no difference in wear numbers or particle counts between a 0w20 all the way up to a 20w50 under normal conditions. There is even work on a 0w10 oil from Honda that can take just as much abuse as "thick" oils. Thicker does not necessarily make it protect better.
Only run a HDEO in a sludger or use a quality type of cleaner. I'd never recommend it in a motor that is not having issues due to the cats.

^^ 5w20 was also used because of the smaller oil passages in the 5.4 3v motors. And yes I'm a firm believer in going 5k just fine in all ford motors except the 3v 5.4. 5k is just fine on any other motor no problems at all. We still see a higher rate with our fleet companies that change at 5k as compared to our other fleets that change at 3k. Ill stick with the proven facts of actually working on the trucks and this particular engine.

The oil passages? They changed the weight in 99 long before the 3v.. And thank you grammar police... Meet cafe standards i was afraid not many people would know what that meant i didnt want people thinking ford changed oil viscosity because of the coffee they drink or something stupid... And the cats? Running a hdeo will not clean the cats... Atleast not that ive heard could be wrong... Look into bob is the oil guy for more info on any Nd all of this... Valvoline or rotella for me... And i urge anyone who lives in hot climates to run 5w30

every 3-3.5K on my 07 5.4 with Motorcraft 5W-30...no intention of changing either and no intention of getting a UOA done

No it's not used because of smaller oil passages. It is used because of a CAFE mandate to hit certain efficiency benchmarks. I have noticed that a lot of motors that never had timing or phaser noise issues, and to this day still don't, have all jumped shipped from the 5w-20 early in their life.
I personally do not think that 5w-20 was an appropriate choice of oil for the 5.4 3v. I'm not saying 5w-20 is garbage, but I wouldn't run it in my 3 valve.
I started a thread a while back about this topic. There is lots of information here.....

I'm running 5w-30 amsoil with great results. Quieter and smoother motor, less tick and better protection are a few of its many benefits. I even swapped out my vct solenoids with the revised solenoids and have achieved a nearly non existent tick.
