That is possibly the most awesome mod I have ever seen!
Where did your head unit go? Do you just push it back a notch? How about the Passenger airbag light? My CD player would be toast, but I don't use it anyway. Do you get WIFI in the driveway?

lets get the full write up on this.... this is by far the coolest thing I have yet to see in 5 years on the forum. I understand how you sanded the plastic to get it flush but what is holding it in place. Did you make some brackets?

Ok So Here is my iPad mini installed in my 05 F-150. It's so strange how perfectly the mini fits in there. It's seriously like it was made for it, even though the mini didn't come out until years after this truck was designed ;-) Also, this install is very easy. I feel like anyone could get this done. The only part that relies on craftsmanship is the sanding of the bezel (I used a oscillating muli-tool) and actually putting it in there straight.
It's secured using heavy duty outdoor rated double sided foam tape. I took out the factory airbag light, left it plugged in, and stashed it under the dash. I had it unplugged at first, but found out that the airbag light in the cluster stays on when you do that. If you look at the bezel, it'll have a lip on the inside. It's that lip that I sanded on the ends, and blended towards the center to make it as flat as possible so the iPad would sit flush. After that, I just applied the tape, and stuck the iPad. Then taped over it. The red you see is the sticky wrapper I left on since I didn't need both sides. I'm telling you that stuff is tough. It's been in there probably a month and it's not going anywhere.
I drilled a hole through the mounting bracket for the lightning connector to go in. I used a lightning to 13 pin adapter cable, as the iSimple gateway has yet to be updated to the lightning fitting. I need to use this: https://shop.soundmanca.com/lightning-90/dp/13 and it would negate the need for either the adapter or drilled hole. I just haven't gotten around to ordering it.
The adapter cord plugs into a serial cable for the gateway.
The serial cable plugs into the iSimple Gateway. It has 2 connections so you can hook up satellite radio, CD changer, or whatever to the other port.
The gateway comes with a wiring harness to plug directly into the factory radio harness. This is why I chose to go this route. 1, it's retarded simple. Anybody could wire this in. 2, it leaves full control of the factory radio AND steering wheel controls. Both of which were very important to me. I can access the radio stations any time I want, change songs and volume via the steering wheel, and all audio from the iPad goes through the factory audio system.

The factory radio stays in the dash cavity. A taped up the cables to the gateway (they give you like 6 feet), stashed the airbag light, and organized the harnesses.
As you can see, you can barely see the white lightning cable when the console is re-installed.
So, it's not necessarily complete or permanent. I wanted it in there, and wasn't sure if I would like it and/or it would do everything I wanted it to, but I'm very happy with it. It didn't require any custom fabricating or fiberglass work, didn't cost hardly anything, and does everything I want or need it to.
Here's a short video of it working:
