Exclamation Fuel Smell - just a leak or something more ominous...?

All,

Have been cruising the site all day - but have not found the one AHA satisfying post.

Background - I just got the truck (2004 F150 Lariat SuperCrew 4x4 5.4L) back from 100000 service - @ 96000 (early) @ Ford Dealer.

Seems to run well - but gas mileage has been slipping a bit recently - I had attributed to a stuck brake caliper (just replaced - rather easy to do).

Immediately following 100K service, have noted and increasingly strong fuel odor in the cab - usually at idle and when accelerating from stop - dissipates at speed.

Fuel filter not replaced - but addressing potential small leak when someone (servicing in past) broke fitting and spliced a new fitting into the line. Does not appear to be the source -but validating.

Have read tons - from loose spark plug (haven't tried to check -why I had it serviced rather than do myself - as have to basically make love to the engine to get at them), to manifold issues (service guy didn't feel this was the issue as no other indications). Now paying more attention to engine - some mild moderate clicking/ticking (pay attention to it?). Basically, looking for advice, likely suspects, and paths to chase down (Ford Dealer could not find - other than 'potential' given the splice near fuel filter - and did not charge me - hmmmmmm). So - help a guy out - who isn't technically scared, but leery at getting into engine &/or fuel issues.

1 - I am ready to address if it is a nuisance (but any recommendations)
2 - if something more - what should I look for (manifold leaks, valve train issues, others?)
3 - what worse case / broke hard paths might this lead down if I cannot address (hydrolock, shot valve train, etc)

I am a frugal guy who has 4K and 5 months left on extended warranty - anything I need to poke at given the ticking clock - when it is someone else's money. Dealer looked at for 1/2 a day - free of charge (free concerned me as well).

Thanks!

When you find this out let me know please I have a 2004 f150 screw that at times I can smell fuel from it to not sure why it does it or if it's a major concern doesn't do it often like once a week if that...
