He (we) both gave up after 3 hours of fighting with the cable and bolts. Getting the door panel off only took 20 minutes, after the consultation with my son who is a mechanic.
After all this experience, I do have a question - - -

Is getting a book (Haynes or Chilton) worth it? I have over 100,000 miles on my '04. This is the first thing that has ever gone wrong, which seems to have been a common problem to others with this year truck. My husband really isn't too thrilled working on it with all the electronics and all. I am not sure how much work on it will get done by me or my husband. I am thinking it is not since I have all you guys!
Not every job (as you found out) is easy to do, but I'd still recommend the purchase of a good repair manual. The ones you mentioned are good for their price, and can be bought at a good auto parts store. Best 20 bucks you'd spend (other than a winning lotto ticket). They usually have decent pics to help you along (murphys law however will point out that pictures are never there on the repair you are currently doing). I use them for the wiring schematics alone. Hard to get that information without a repair manual.
The next repair may be much easier with the book, so I vote yes: buy one. And good for you in showing up those male mechanics on tostesterone (spelling?). It's always a good day when you can show up at a repair shop and describe the fault and its solution, regardless of gender. Hats off to you!

I will probably not get the book, even though it is a good idea. My son has a 2004 Ford Super Crew with a diesel. Nice truck (bigger than mine - damn him). He is a mechanic whom I trust with it more than the hubby. Girlfriend is a mechanic (and an engineer)... I am pretty set with all I need. Actually it was the girlfriend that suggested I look on the web for some help on this. I hope this is the worse thing that happens to my truck. At some time in the furture, I still may get it, but until then, I have you guys.

I don't think I will get a manual. I have the son that is a mechanic and he has a book on his truck, which we used to get the panel off. Granted he is 15 hours away from me. Thank goodness for "family plans" on the cell phone. LOL
I don't totally trust this dealership I took it too, but I have little choice right now. I am just trying to gather all my info before I go pick it up and get the bill. They looked at me like I was crazy when I went in there and told them what was wrong with it and told them the part that I needed. Hate to sound sexist (and NOT trying to start an arguement), but I guess they don't think women are that smart or they don't like it when people (man or woman) comes in knowing what is wrong with it. I know not all mechanics are that way, but this is a small town and I have dealt with this issue before (when buying a truck). That is another story...
I do greatly appreciate all the information that you guys have given me when dealing with this issue. I feel more confident going to get the repair done.

Hello Marinemon et al;
I am glad you got your window repaired, and that it was fairly reasonable. A body never knows how much a window that works is needed until it stops working! LOL!.

Happy motoring,

It was horrible when it happened. 8pm and my way shopping with my son. Place where we shop isn't the best, so I couldn't leave my window down, so had to turn around and go back home. Took the door apart first thing the next morning and then went shopping.

I've got vice-grips holding up my driver window until I get some mullah. My cable are in tact but the black plastic gear pulley that the cables wrap around has broken teeth on it that stick into the motor.

What does it take to finally get a recall! GEEZ..........
