Not sure if this is the same problem but I just fixed the solenoid in my truck - It wasn't engaging in to 4HI when I turned the dial. I have the extended warranty on my 04 F150 which covers only "manual switches". Apparently this is not a manual switch???? cost was $220 Cdn at the dealership.
Good luck.

final verdict, for those interested.....the automatic locking hub was engaging when in 4x4....then not completely disengaging...even in 2x4 it wanted to be engaged, and was then chewed up pretty good

2 hours labour @ 80 bucks ..160
the vacuum hub ................190
tax man 50

makes for a cool 400 canadian....i thought it would be more to be honest but there goes my tune up money
