Thanks.

Well honestly this wasnt a hard job at all to get apart. worst part other than getting the valve cover out was getting the fan to break loose. Although it would probably seem worse if I did it all in one day but instead ive only worked on it for short periods of time over the course of the week. With that said Im just going to throw new guides on the one side and replace the valve cover and solenoid that I broke and see how it runs. That and obviously Ill have to pull the oil pan and retrieve whatever plastic is down in there. Hopefully thats possible I havent even looked at it yet for removal.

If it runs good Ill drive it how it is. If it doesnt, then fine ill have to pull the engine, only thing ill be out is the little time I spent on it this week + oil, coolant etc. Id rather take that chance anyday vs just assuming the worst and dumping thousands of dollars into a 10 year old truck that seemed to run fine

Glad its coming along, taking the fan off can be a pain but I figured out a quick method. I picked up a length of chain about 8 inches long, put one link under a bolt at the fan and the other end under a bolt at the engine block. When turning the fan with the wrench, the chain holds it in place so that I can remove it. Takes about 30 seconds now to remove it and to put it back on and tighten.

Funny you mention that, I actually tried that method, and it worked but the stud I connected the other end of the chain to actually bent and it broke the timing chain housing which it goes thru before threading into the block. It was at the top of the housing so i dont think itll be a problem, Ill post a pic when i go out and start working on it again, but you have to be carefully of what bolt you put the chain on. I couldnt believe how tight that fan nut was

That sucks, sorry to hear that. I guess that I got lucky on getting mine off. I took a lot of time on mine as well, I took a week off from work and did a couple hours here and there when I did mine. I really didn't want to have to rush and get it done in 1 day or over a weekend. Take your time, look at everything, verify everything before you put her back together and be careful when reinstalling the valve covers, I rolled a gasket on the drivers side and had to take the vc back off. Also, spray some throttle body cleaner on your vct solenoids and dip them in oil before you reinstall them. It helped me get rid of a p0012 code when I thought that I was gonna have to tear it all apart again. Forgot to do that part of the process. Good luck.

Default Sludge in engine, need replacement

[QUOTE=izzysplace;3865855]Well first things first! I have an 05 and I just had an engine put in it last week, when all was said and done it cost $1500 in parts and labor and $2889 for the remanfactured engine ,,,QUOTE]"

Hey izzysplace, I'd like to know what company you got that remanu engine from and if it's working out well. I have a 2007 F150 Lariat that I bought in October 2014, had 123,000 miles, seemed to run strong. Day after Christmas the truck shut down, been to a shop and a dealership, both said I need a new engine. Dealer mechanic showed me inside with the covers off, it's all sludge horror show. Both dealer and shop are quoting me about $8k for the engine replacement with a Jaspers remanufactured. (this is in Alexandria, VA). Rest of truck is in good shape and both shops couldn't find anything else mechanically wrong. But I paid $12,300 for it and now it's like a nightmare. Never replaced an engine before, so I'm shocked at that price. Looking for a good but less expensive option than the Jaspers.

CT,
Sorry to hear the bad news for you but I need to ask.... what kind of oil had been used and what were the oil change intervals? I run Mobile 1 synthetic and change about every 6k miles. I can't see any other cause for a sludged up engine than just poor owner maintenance. My 2006 Lariat has 164K miles and going strong. My other two cars each have well over 200K miles and both run great. I think if an owner changes his belts, fluids, and hoses when he should his car should last a good long while. People who come on forums like this one and complain because their engine failed at low mileage are most likely the people who never take care of them. Just my .02 cents. That said, I know you just recently purchased the truck but looking at service records is an important part of buying a used vehicle.

CT McG I sent you a PM! The motor I have is running awesome! Powertrain Products is where I got it from.

I bought the additional no fault warranty so if anything fails for any reason they will repair or replace on them! Motor has a 4 year one million mile warranty.

I had to replace my Cats (it appears the bank 1 front cat grenaded and most of the substrate was sucked into the 1st motor, Bank 2 front cat was clogged as well) With new cats it is breathing again and I am super happy

I dont know anything about maintenance history on the truck. Previous owner was a farmer who I assume only took care of things when they needed to be dealt with. When I look at buying a vehicle for what its worth i try to get maintenance records. But when I buy something like this with high miles for dirt cheap I honestly don't really care how it was treated previously. Just going to fix it and drive it
