4x4 trying but not engaging
I have a 2006 F150 that won't engage in 4 wheel drive. The light comes on but there is just a ticking noise coming from the front end as if it was trying to go in to 4 wheel drive. Recently I had a problem with the truck making noise when it was in 2wd. It would go away when I put it in 4wd. I thought it may be vacuum lines when I had the previous problem, but they just keep the truck in 2wd, correct?

I know I just had a problem with my 05 F150 Screw not engaging and had to get the pulse vaccuum hub replaced.
Now the vehicle will engage but there is a loud knocking that is obviously not right while driving in 4 High. Also, it will not engage on the fly. Anyone have any ideas for this? While trying to engage on the fly and continually knocks and sounds pretty badly.
The truck has 50,000 miles on it (37,000 when i got it six months ago). Before I bought the vehicle the previous owner had the vaccuum pump replaced.
HELP? This is pissing me off.

Just had the truck up on a ramp and when you spin the passenger front side wheel with your hands, it makes a loud clicking noise, just like the price is right wheel. Actuator maybe?

I recently had to replace the wheel bearing in my truck. While I had it at the shop they noticed a tear in my CV boot where a bunch of grease has been spit out of the tear. They asked me if I have heard any clicking yet. I told them no which is true. They wanted to replace the whole transaxle instead of just the CV boot and regrease it. Anyway while you have it up on ramps check if you have a tear in the CV boot.

OK, so I had my truck in to the dealer today and got it fixed. They replaced the two actuators in the front and the IWE solenoid behind the battery. Problem solved. I assume the actuators solved the problem of not going into 4WD and the clunking and the solenoid cured the problem of the rattling noise while in 2WD. I reminded them that they charged me $150 for labor a month ago when they told me it was the vaccum lines and that they weren't under warranty. Needless to say I will be fighting to get it back.
So that's it. Hope this helps out a few people.

My 06 F150 auto trans has 4x4 on the fly which has always worked fine, yesterday though we were driving around and all was good but later in the day I was switching in-out of 4x4 due to dry roads in places, when I got towards home I switched it to 4HI and it didnt engage, not even the light came on, and no servo noise.
today I checked every fuse and relay associated with the 4x4 system (there are many) and even checked the connections on the transfer case servo.
The only thing I havent done is check for power at the switch on the dash.
Any hints or advice? is this not unheard of with "shift on the fly"?
