read this thread and others, pulled cluster this week.
found all circuit board solder joints intact.
reconnected the cluster and it now works.
if it continues to work, it might have been the battery which i replaced. the display went out shortly after. time will tell. thanks for the info
this failed again. this time i found the odo display not fully seated in the connector. i corrected that & its been working since.

Follow up to this thread -

The LCD assembly is the problem. Yes you can pull it out and reseat it, but that is not the solution. We manufactured replacement LCD's and will have them soon.

Talking Nerve Racking!

First post, have a laugh on me:

(New to me 2008 F-150 - had it a week)
The back light on the odo was intermittent from day one. Found this thread and thought I'd give it a go!
Being as the light would come on/off I didn't think to actually check the bulb. Didn't clue in that the light bulb behind the LCD lit it up(dah!)

All went well until I went to pop the needles off the pins. It sasn't easy, and 3 of the six 6 little gear boxes popped apart instead of the needles coming off!!
Little gear wheels went flying! Found them all but one (But didn't know that at the time) figured out how they worked, and put them all back together.
Now paranoid that the gauges wouldn't read correctly... Plugged the cluster back into the truck (cluster sounded like it wanted to self destruct! - needles bouncing all over the place)
discovered the one gauge not working... frantically started searching for parts and found the missing gear wheel.... Took the cluster apart again, replaced the gearwheel,
plugged it all in and all the gauges worked! (I had to tweak it a little) but it seems they are self calibrating when first plugged in! Yeah!)

Only problem was, the OBO was still not illuminated!
Uhm... lets check the bulb... wow, seems its now burnt out. Quick run to the local car mart, picked up a new bulb, plugged it in, and wouldn't yea know it?! Its illuminated!
Wow, what an ordeal! Learned lots. Mostly that this was kinda easy to work on, even after the cluster imploded in on itself...

But thanks for this thread... without it, I wouldn't have got this done by myself, and learned what I did!
Cheers!

Price? Will the display need flashed or is the mileage stored somewhere else? Any more information about it? Where will it be available at?

We can post a solution to the problem, but not link the product then, correct?

As long as it's not a blatant advertisement and meets the rules described below.

We have recently had to update these rules due to some vendors exploiting the rather lax rules we've had in place and thereby causing some complaints. Please read and re-read them to ensure you're in compliance with these rules while using our forum as one of your showcases. Thank you in advance.

1) Vendors on F150Forum.com will be able to create threads in the Vendor Showcase sub-forum telling members about deals and specials they are having at their store/site.

2) Vendors are also allowed to make posts throughout F150Forum.com as long as their posts are on-topic and are not a blatant advertisement for their product or store. To expand upon this using the "Show of your pics of your XX truck" thread as an example- plastering images of vehicles running your company's products can be construed as blatant advertisement and thus be removed by staff if deemed fit. A user asking questions about a product and you (as a vendor) answering this question is encouraged. Answering this question and providing a link and/or pricing thru you (as a vendor) is also considered blatant advertisement. These advertisements are to be kept in the section specifically designed for them.

3) Vendors are also allowed to create two (2) threads in the Trades & Sales section of the site per month. ***Intentionally bumping your thread to keep it at the top of the showcase via the stereotypical "BUMP" post or replying to excessively old inquiry's under a veil to keep them at the top WILL not be tolerated and thus, this can cause for post/thread removal as deemed fit by staff.

4) Vendors are also allowed to have a link to their site in their signatures.

5) Only Vendors will be able to create threads in the Vendor forum, but all members will be able to respond in the threads.

I finally got around to ordering this Tanin auto lcd display for my 2008 because of the issues i kept having. So far so good it seems to be fixed. I’ll try to remember to update later on. I have had to pull my dash apart about every six months and reset the lcd display. With the new tanin lcd display i haven’t had any issues yet. Granted i just got it installed today, but I’m hopeful i won’t have to take my dash apart again!!
