Surprise - 2009 F-150 Gas Gauge Issue
#21
Often times (and in my case) the evap purge valve will cause negative pressure on the tank and partially collapse it, thus bending the rods that mount the fuel pump. After I replaced the valve it runs great but fuel gauge still reads 1/4 tank lower than what I actually have. Not worth it to me to spend the money to replace the pump because of it, just annoying. The evap purge valve is on the back right side of the throttle body. Google the image would be the easiest way to get a picture of it. Part cost me about $100. I hope this info helps, just sharing my experience.

Well I found out my problem was the fuel pump was bent after I hit a mudd flap flying down the road from a truck. Already had changed purge valve. $758.00 later my gas gauge works great.

Do the fuel tank filler caps have a one way vent built into them to allow air in as the fuel is consumed on these trucks? Or is that what the evac purge valve does? Where is the evac purge valve (9L3Z9E730) & solenoid (7L12-9b328A) which snaps into the front of charcoal cannistor located? I have a 2009 and do not want to experience this problem. I would like to understand how this system works and fails so I can take preventative measures before this problem surfaces. Even if that means manually venting the fuel tank.

I never saw nor did my mechanic see any damage to tank due to purge valve not working. The fuel pump was bent at a 30* angle causing the float to read full when it was full but would quickly burn to half tank causing low fuel indicator. I had a 1/2 to 3/4 tank of fuel when tank was dropped to change fuel pump. Hope that helps cause I had a hell of a time tacking it all down.

Due to the tank being plastic, you likely will not see any damage. It returns to original shape once it gets rid of negative pressure. Not before bending the rods on pump.

This is how all this started. Check engine light came on so I changed 2 of the 4 O2 sensors after having codes checked. Check engine light goes off. I think it's all good...not. Light comes on again so I use a trick I learned. Turning key over 7-10 times to the start /off position without actually stating engine in rapid secession will cause door locks to engage thus clearing code.basically I had the purge valve go out along with hitting a mudd flap thus bending fuel pump. Purge valve replacement took care of engine light but fuel gauge was the other issue. Dropped tank & behold bent fuel pump.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one having the problem
2009 F-150 XTR
after being at the dealership for 3 days they were stumped - NO IDEA Contacted Head Office CANADA
HERE IT COMES ...didn't fix the problem - gas gauge still not working but she has a bill for $1800.00 for other parts that apparently needed to be done asap - New front rotors and brakes, new uppers (front end) NICE
Thanks for taking the time to look over my concern ....
Until then
PS- What is involved in a 're-boot' and what is done - thx

air trapped when filling tank
changed out fuel pump. Tried to put a few gallons in to test tank. How to do with air coming out fill tube. Where is this thing vented. I noticed a vent valve on top off tank. I blew threw it before I installed tank should this be hard to blow thru. Never had problems with fill up before pump went bad.
