Reasoning for Wiring Issue (re:Gas Gauge)
Ford Dealer had the truck for *3 days* and could not find problem
All computers and scanners reading normal
Apparently they called Head Office for more troubleshoot advice - nothing
'Guessing' it's in the tank - but not sure - well that's a $800 bill I'm not ready to spend - why replace if not broken according to your testers.
The local garage has the majority of same equipment as Ford Dealership and BOTH came back with same result. They just decided to continue THEIR search by other means, contacting other Ford Dealers and garages in area if they ever came into same problem. Suggested to test ALL wiring .. dropped tank .. pulled out unit-tested fine..tested wiring from tank all under the truck to the dash where apparently they got no signal - ANY IDEAS??
ALL 'FORD' COMPUTER AND SMALLER GARAGE TESTING EQUIPMENT STATES EVERYTHING FINE WITH COMPUTER
LOOKING FOR POSITIVE ANSWER TO PROBLEM-NO GUESSING
Since we have final say - we will ask to have evap valve changed as you had suggested .. then if no other ideas as to what is causing this will need to continue to dash
Is there any easier way to diagnose cluster / gas gauge itself - prob not .... manufacturer/garages wouldn't make any money to fix the problem if it was EASY ACCESS owners would be able to pinpoint problems easier - maybe I'm wrong - but makes sense.
Not sure - looking for answers
Let's pull straws - apparently Ford is as they have not given us a definite answer to what problem is- could be this - might be that - seriously?
Plus the dealership used 'scare tactics' in telling my wife (while truck was there for 3 days) that ALL of these other problems had to be changed ASAP
When asked to see old parts - already gone - convenient
Not impressed - deal with Ford and that issue later
Still have until Monday morning for other 'possibilities' - hopefully they are a easy fix lol HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND

Inappropriate behavior from senior member
Seriously?
IS THIS APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR OF A SENIOR MEMBER OF FORD FORUM?
I find it to be both inappropriate and uncalled for as the comment has nothing to do with my reason for joining the forum - to ask questions.
Hopefully you get your truck fixed, looks like you
are running low on your meds.
Seriously? How do I deserve to be spoken too like this?
Please tell me exactly without a doubt what the problem is an it will be replaced .. and if your wrong ... remove yourself from the forum; as you obviously know nothing about Ford trucks.
There how does that sound?
Up to the challenge?
Or does one become a Senior Member by just paying money instead of actually working on ford trucks?
Using inappropriate behavior for a member of Senior Status ... seriously?
So tell us all what the problem obviously is - curious as to why you just didn't tell us all in the first place - you obviously know what the problem is
100% percent guaranteed.
I don't pay money for guesses - do you?

Ford Customer Service
Glad to see that I'm not the only one having the problem
2009 F-150 XTR
Originally the problem started 8 weeks ago ... truck started acting up (spit/spat) then wouldn't take a full tank when I needed it ...
NOW I KNEW my suspicions were right ... after being at the dealership for 3 days they were stumped - NO IDEA Contacted Head Office CANADA
HERE IT COMES ...didn't fix the problem - gas gauge still not working but she has a bill for $1800.00 for other parts that apparently needed to be done asap - New front rotors and brakes, new uppers (front end) NICE ...

I've changed both evac purge valve (9L3Z9E730) & solenoid (7L12-9b328A) which snaps into the front of charcoal cannistor. After changing evac purge valve engine service light has gone off but refilling of tank (1/2) & fuel gauge (3/4) are about to **** me off. No. I am pissed off. What else does one have to do to fix this problem?

Thanks for letting us know. Good feeling when you finally get the problem solved.
Too bad some had to respond the way they did...
Did the fuel pump have anything to do with the difficulty of getting gas into the tank or that was a separate issue?

Do the fuel tank filler caps have a one way vent built into them to allow air in as the fuel is consumed on these trucks? Or is that what the evac purge valve does? Where is the evac purge valve (9L3Z9E730) & solenoid (7L12-9b328A) which snaps into the front of charcoal cannistor located? I have a 2009 and do not want to experience this problem. I would like to understand how this system works and fails so I can take preventative measures before this problem surfaces. Even if that means manually venting the fuel tank.

on my 2009 my gas gauge is not always 100% accurate ( will say i had much less than what is really in) got 118k now, at around 35,800k (right before full warranty was up) my truck would not run smooth, not start on first try, one time it even died while driving. They ended up replacing fuel tank, pump/sending unit, sensors, etc.
So now because its acting up again, should I replace the whole pump, just the sending unit? (is that possible?), and what about the evac purge valve? anything else it could be?

Often times (and in my case) the evap purge valve will cause negative pressure on the tank and partially collapse it, thus bending the rods that mount the fuel pump. After I replaced the valve it runs great but fuel gauge still reads 1/4 tank lower than what I actually have. Not worth it to me to spend the money to replace the pump because of it, just annoying. The evap purge valve is on the back right side of the throttle body. Google the image would be the easiest way to get a picture of it. Part cost me about $100. I hope this info helps, just sharing my experience.
