Next, I wrapped the installed 1" coupling with 3M rubber/foam weather stripping for muffle and noise absorption. I then placed the 1.25" coupling over the 1" and 3M wrap, partially enveloping the base of the upper shaft u-joint that connects to the mid shaft. I did NOT cover any part the joints that might hinder operation. Lastly, I secured the coupling firmly with the rings provided making sure there was no slip. I went for a test drive down roads that almost always irritate the rack... 100% better! Two days so far, still quiet. If the noise is coming from the rack and all steering shafts are tight, then we are dealing with referred noise that can be absorbed, to an extent. Results may vary, but feel free to give it a try. I will experiment more this weekend.
We need some pics of this solution.

Took mine in for this issue last week. Booked an appointment, explained over the phone what it was doing, when I brought it in I sat in the waiting room for about 2 hours, service adviser brought my truck around and explained it was the steering shaft and that they had replaced it.
No more noise or loose feeling. Hopefully it lasts! Truck has 21000kms on it now.

Hey guys not sure whats up with my 12, I have a slight vibration in the steering wheel, and shake in the drivers seat.

It can be felt at any speed, theres no noise or rattles associated with it just ghe steering wheel and drivers seat vibration!

Does this sound like a bad steering rack? Ive had new cooper at3 tires put on, and had them checked 3x and its not them! No warped rotors, Im at a loss here... This vibrations Driving Me Nuts!!!

Also, I have 69k miles, so no warranty on my 12...

Sounds unrelated to this the steering rack issue. This forum is related to a pop/ clunk felt through the steering wheel and isn't a vibration.

I was pretty certain it wasnt, but hell yah never know!

Turned out to be a blown p.s. rear shock! 1st time ever in my life for that... Atleast it was a reasonable fix...

I finally took mine back in. Day one and two...rack was a quiet as a mouse. Day three, it showed its ugly face. I'm currently pending approval for replacement. Fingers crossed.

Hello,

I'm Chad, the new Ford Service Rep. Please PM your truck's current mileage; I'll see how I can help.

Ford straight-up denied the new rack because no fault codes were present. They installed a new steering shaft and it firmed things up considerably, but I can faintly feel a knock every once in a while...probably because I'm listening for it. My dealer felt bad and heavily discounted a new rack, but I have no intention if my current result holds or until a new design comes out.

Best of luck

Default Finally!! EPAS solved (for me anyway)

I originally came to this forum looking for answers in 2012 after purchasing my first F-150, a 2012 King Ranch 4x4 with all the trimmings. I bought it in January 2012 and by spring I noticed problems with my steering (among other things). I decided to wait to have it looked at until my first oil change. I eventually had 3 (that's THREE) Electronic Power Assist Steering units in my truck. The last EPAS apparently solved the problem, but after many hours of friggin frustration and sheer unadulterated pissed-offed-ness here is the final analysis. MY SOLUTION? I drove that miserable piece of S@#$! for 2 years as I paid down a 50k F150 enough to TRADE IT IN with equity. Problem solved. The EPAS system was flawed. No doubt about it. If you owned an F150 after 2011 with EPAS, you know by now 4 years later people are still feeling the pain. (Read my post about NEXTEER and PACIFIC CENTURY MOTORS). I loved my F-150 King Ranch enough to get another. In July 2014 I picked up another KR 4x4 with, yup ECOBOOST and 15k miles later NO EPAS trouble. I understand this may not be the answer to YOUR EPAS problem, but so far it appears the 2014s seem to be immune. We'll keep our fingers crossed!
