QNX is from Blackberry but that's it. It has little relation to Blackberries. It's a real-time OS that's used in many, many industrial applications where failure is not an option. It's based on a UNIX-like Kernel and is really, really good. Video Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QNX

Personally I would have liked to see some embedded Linux but QNX is a step in the right direction.

Choosing Microsoft was a huge mistake for Ford. Their "auto" platform, like all Windows CE (which it was based on) is utter garbage, built on the unreliable Windows kernel. It's no wonder it didn't work right as things got more complicated. Windows in all forms is utter garbage.

Now let's just see what cars get it first. The wife is looking at a new vehicle in '15 and this may be worth waiting for!
Go back 7 years or so and sync was darn near the best car link system on the mass market. It was truly revolutionary. Unfortunately it didn't keep up and as happens often the first movers get behind. Basically Ford wasa decade ahead and ended up getting passed because they were tied to a single system.

The new iterations of systems coming up should scare the crap out of everybody. There will undoubtedly be non standard implementations of systems that only work with certain compatible phones. Then add in the inevitable lack of system updates on car systems and the frequent update schedule for phones and it is a recipe for disaster. You will get the privilege of paying your dealer to flash your system every few months to keep it going.

Dumb Bluetooth connections like basic sync with some refinements strikes me as far superior to android auto or car play. Both will have vested interests on making features that only work in their system. Heck apple already has a complete bs patent on geofencing related to car integration. I've been doing that crap with tasker for years.

Unless the us patent office gets much smarter and manufacturers of cars get much better about designing and updating these systems I predict gobs of unhappy customers after 6 months to a year.

But qnx has been in vw, Audi, BMW, and gm for a while now.

Hey Kenferg1,

Although current SYNC owners will not have the option of upgrading to SYNC 3, you aren't being left behind! Ford will continue providing software updates for current owners to optimize compatibility and performance as new consumer devices become available.

Hello Abraham5G,

SYNC 3 is being launched in 2015, but specific vehicle implementation information (say that 5 times fast ) hasn’t been announced just yet. We plan to migrate to all new vehicles in North America by the end of 2016.

Hey Enginner5,

Due to the cost of hardware, software licensing, and labor time, there are currently no plans to offer SYNC 3 as an aftermarket installation.

Hell, by now it should be able to start my pickup. I shouldn't even have a key fob.... My phone and truck should be able to speak together and unlock the door. Not that I need any of this, but it should have the ability to do it. It effin irks me, because I would be happy with 0 buttons, and just walk into the pickup and go. I'm simple and it can't even do that.
To me, it sounds like you’re describing a bad Bluetooth connection, OilFieldCash.

The system is designed to automatically connect upon entering the vehicle and starting the engine. The first (and easiest) troubleshooting step I recommend, is performing a soft reset to the iPhone. Just hold the POWER and HOME buttons until the Apple logo shows up on the screen. When the phone powers back up, you should notice an improvement in your Bluetooth connection with SYNC.

Also, if you haven’t already updated your phone’s software to V8.1 or higher, I recommend doing this.

I wish it would auto restore the Bluetooth streaming, but that is minor. Most cars have a setting you can select to either continue from last spot or wait for command. Not sync. I've used it with 4 different android phones and two I phones. Outside of recent iOS 8 issues none had a problem connecting, calling, or streaming. And the ios problems were fixed by an update and had nothing to do with sync, it was a phone bug.
Hi packplantpath,

From what you've described, I'd say your SYNC system is functioning as intended.

Software upgrades are one thing. Completely changing the operating system is another.

I would love to see a completely new OS available for our trucks.

Better yet, tell the Ford reps to read OUR forum where we can be honest and uncensored (to a point). They would have developed the world's best truck by now...

You folks do seem to have a lot of great ideas!

I'm happy to document feedback on my end. I just enjoy the website because you can see ideas from other owners. Sometimes it is fun to see what others come up with!

You can always feel free to PM recommendations/feedback along with your name, VIN, current mileage and best phone number. I'll take care of it from there.

FordIVTeam,
I have 6 iPhones and 4 iPads and multiple iPods. All are up to date with the Lastest IOS as soon as it's available. It's a Microsoft sync issue or maybe an issue with apple. But my main complaint is that and me having to tell if blue tooth audio every time the truck goes from no key in the ignition to being turned on. And no option to have it this way
