Default That clunking noise when it shifts down to 1

What is that? It seems I read something about that somewhere but not sure where.

Basically, when I'm slowing down and almost to a complete stop, I hear a soft "clunk" or "thunk" sound in the tranny or torque converter. Is that by design or should I be concerned? I don't like those types of sounds in my drive train.

BTW, this is the 6spd that comes with the 4.6 3v.

Possible worn slip yoke!?

Ford Rangers have a TSB out for this problem.

mine feels like the rear end is clinking into drive when i start from a stop and when i am slowing as well. I just figured it was some slip in the drive train or something. Is this not common?

It is a harsh 2-1 downshift. There is a TSB out for this issue. Take it to the dealer and describe the noise/feeling.

Thanks for the responses. I will contact the dealer and see what they say about it. I don't want it to go on for a long time and end up screwing up the tranny or t.c.

Well, now that I'm over 5K miles, it seems to have stopped. The downshifts seem uneventful now...no clunking or hitting sounds. If anything changes, I guess I'll talk to the dealer about the update.

I don't know if this is exactly the same issue but I get a growl at 28-30 mph when I first take off in the morning. It's not too worrysome so I waited until I went into the dealer for my first oil change and I made sure I told them about the issue.

When I picked the truck back up the service sheet says "C/S vehicle makes clunking noise between 28 and 30 mph" - "Normal Characteristic of six speed transmission - Aaron."

I guess I've got nothing to worry At least they put it in writing.

I don't get a clunk anymore but I do get an occasional shudder when I take my foot off the brake which is kind of strange
