You never know, your life could depend on it some day.

that was my initial thought as well. i searched around and read good and bad things, but you'll hear that about everything. but more often than not i read good stuff. i googled reveiws for it for about 40 mins haha. but i found a 12k winch for around the same price just a min ago. i have not looked into it at all yet though.

Think strong and heavy. 1/4" steel strong and 2x the weight of your rig. Mounted with a center pull to the center of your frame. 1st you want to do when it is done is pull under the bridge and hand it up there over night. One thing to think about. When you get a 12,000 lb. winch it doesn't have a lot of room on the spool. Many want the new synthetic ropes for ease of use. That sets you back some bucks. The old cable is best though, just don't kink it. I'll get a lot of flack for saying " it's best. You're the one to best decide that. You can get features like wireless operation, great if you are all alone in the wilderness and the rig is on her top.

I've had a harbor freight winch in the 10,000 lb model.. its been on for 3 yrs and gets used almost weekly out in the mountains and never once has it left me down... but from what I've read the older one like I have is actually a exact copy of mile marker.. And yes I've had a higher priced one.. I had a warn on my 350 s.d diesel and they are very similar in comparison but this is just my opinion and it cost 1/3 of what I payed for my warn.. Hope this helps

I have mine hidden mounted behind the bumper on mine. I have a Warn XD12i. The more reputable companies rate their winches @ a 75% single line pull. Also any time you use a ****** block you will double your pull capacity.

A couple of things you should have to go along with the winch: leather gloves & something to hang on the cable.

GLOVES: sometime there are stray cable wires that can really mess up your hands.

I forget what its called but you need something hanging on the cable in case the cable snaps. Pretty much anything. I use a sweat shirt. Instead of the cable coming straight back when it snaps it will fall to the ground. It doesn't take much to drop it. The synthetic rope won't need anything.

Just a FYI: a steel cable snapping CAN decapitate a person!

I have a Viper Max 3k with synthetic cable on my ATV and have beat the crap out of it and it's held up great. I hope to eventually put their Elite 12k on my truck. It's more expensive than some of the cheap winches but waterproof, synthetic cable, wireless remote and comes with a nice ****** block.

Service was top rate, too. I misplaced a couple bolts during install and called them up, took about 5 minutes to order what I needed.
