I bought a used work van which is a chevy express 3500 with the basic radio, I am installing a touchscreen on it so that I can install a back up cam and ran into my first problem with the wiring harness.. apparently I need a stupid expensive harness (Axxess GMOS-LAN-01) even tho I don't have the Bose system. I tried wiring it up without that Axxess harness and it's not powering up the system! I guess even the lower end vehicles have more complicated radios than I thought. Long story short, I gave up on using the $16 harness and just bought that over prices piece, I'll see how that works out.
Ideally I wanted help to wire the new head unit by bi-passing all the BS with the canbus, I think I failed or lack experience even tho I have installs

You just need to find constant power for memory, ignition wire, and a ground to bypass the oem system and hook up the speaker wires. Get a multi meter out and it shouldn't be too hard.

What Robert8252 said. It might be better to run a constant directly from the battery so that you aren't interfering with any other source.
