I actually found a way to tell if my lights are on or not in AUTO mode. When you pull out the headlight **** it turns on the fog lights and the fog lights indicator illuminates. So when I'm driving along and I wonder if my lights are on, I glance down and if I see the fog light indicator lit up, lights are on. If it's not lit up ... lights are off.

And, it's a 2014 XLT 4X4 6.5 SuperCab - 3.5L V6 EcoBoost - "Blue Jeans".
Yes. In the "On" position the shut-off timer does not apply and it take ~12 minutes for them to turn off. Ford should have added a menu setting "Apply to On Position" for the timer.

Here is what I did:

My wife has a 2013 Escape which had great headlight indicators. I was surprised that my 2013 Lariat does not have them. I guess I should have purchased a BMW pickup truck.

That's what I do. You can tell if you adjust the gauge cluster lights. They dim down when the lights are on. I think there are 3 stages though.

Dawn/dusk- Gauge cluster dim, no headlights
Day- Cluster bright, no headlights
Dark- Cluster dim, headlights on

I found that if its dark out and I can see the road ahead of me, the lights are on.

An important aspect of headlights is so other driver see you and Auto-Lamps shouldn't be relied on to do the job in all situations.

For some people, yes. I see a lot of vehicles driving without lights when they should be on. Whether they just don't know any better or are unwisely relying on automatic lights I can't say. I'm just saying that factory Auto-Lamps aren't adequate for all situations. I fixed mine so that they are.
