Default Light duty F250?

I have always been curious about this but have never asked... What the hell was the purpose for the F250 LD that was around in '98-'99? Was it any different than an F150 with the 5.4 and a towing package?

Both right. It had the bigger rear axle, (I believe the Ford 10.25), heavier springs, was available with 4.10 gears on 8 foot bed models, had 7-lug wheels, and a much heavier front end. It basically was the truck you got if you ordered an F150 with the snowplow prep package.

The F250 light duty later became the F150 7700 (for 7700 gvwr). It's still available today, but it's the F150 with snowplow prep.

So it's kind of like the 79 Chevrolet Silverado Big 10 that my dad used to own?

Taking all that into consideration, what then would be the difference between that and a 5.4L F250 SD??

Yeah, the body is different from the superduty, but the superduty has a solid front axle instead of independant suspension, bigger transmission, and a much heavier frame. and a 10.5 inch rear end.

The GVWR on a Superduty is around 9900#, and the new HD F150 is 8200#. Towing is probably close to the same.

I think rather than call it a light duty F-250, it would've been more appropriate to call it a heavy duty F150, like they do now. (Yes, just like when Chevy had the "HEAVY HALF.")
