Default If I swap cabs...

If I swap a donor cab onto my frame, what happens to the VIN number?

Do I now use the VIN number from the donor cab, or is the VIN number transferred from my old cab/inherited with my frame & ECU?

Anyone done this?

Everything from insurance to tags, etc., relies on the vin. I would think you would have to obtain proof of ownership for the donor cab. Not sure what would happen if the donor vin was "dirty". I.E. out for repo, etc. Very interesting situation. For legality, I would think the DMV would have to get involved somewhere..
I would say it's way too much hassle...

Not sure where you are (update your profile) but in Canada it is illegal to alter or move VIN tags. In our case the truck would now be under the VIN of the new cab.

The vin is etched into the frame in a few places, police know where to look for it. The vin remains with the vehicle chassis not the cab. Might require some type of paper work to document changes that will vary by state.

The potential donor is clean and I will have a title for it.

Did they etch frames back in 1998 or 2001?

I don't remember exactly when they started doing it but it's a lot farther back than that.

This will vary by state. You will probably have to get the truck inspected by DMV or State police. I would call them or check their website for information.

This is a question better answered by your local DMV.
