Brand New FX4 Rust Issues
Just purchased a brand new FX4 (custom build from Dearborn Michigan) and picked it up from the Dealer on March 1st -2014. To my surprise, 45 days later I look under the truck to find a number of major components have excessive corrosion issues. Anyone out there have the same issues? Anyone have a successful resolution from the dealer or from Ford? Feedback appreciated......

Unfortunately you will most likely get answers from both sides of the fence on this one. Some will say it's normal, some will say it's bs. Based on my experience, working in body shops since I was 15, and dealers for the last 6 years, it's pretty common. Seen it for years. I've worked in Ford /Chevy dealers, Toyota/Nissan etc. Seen it on most. Some get it worse than others. But, Ford most likely won't do anything, unless you have a really great dealer.

my brand new 2014 FX4's drive shaft is just like that, but my axle and other "painted" metal is still black and rust free. Not sure why your axle and other metals on the axle are rusting. I would at least check with your dealer to verify that nothing is out of the ordinary. But just remember, some surface rust is not going to harm the truck. It may look bad to you, but unless the metal really starts actually "rusting out", it's just an appearance thing.
Oddly enough, a thin layer of surface rust actually protects the metal underneath. Not to get too far out there, but if you are familiar with "blued metal" like on guns, then you may know that "blueing" is actually a form of rust. It's typically done on high carbon iron/steel to protect it. So again, don't get too worried unless the rust seems to be really eating away at the metal rather than just forming a thin oxidized layer on the surface.

That's 100% normal and to be expected. It doesn't effect anything but apperance. If your concerned about corrosion have your truck undercoated yearly then take it on a dirt road so the dirt sticks to the underneath instead of salt. My 04 GMC wasn't in as good shape as my 97 grand marquis I had a few years ago because of how well undercoated the Grand Marquis was.

If you want to, you can take it to Ford and have the service mgr. make note of it on your truck. In case something down the road happens and it's culprit was the rust, you may have something to back you up.
