Calling all Diesel gurus... Excusion guys please read!
I'm wanting to buy an Excursion for my fiance who was recently involved in a motorcycle wreck.
If she ever regains the ability to drive I want her in a big *** vehicle. MPG aren't really an issue. However, maintenance is, I prefer to do my own. I know nothing about diesel engines, would buying one be a bad idea. I know they are "more expensive to run" because of more oil and filter costs, not to mention I know diesels are expensive to repair. If you own one either gas or diesel please let me know what you think of it. I'm not planning on using it for towing. Just for the future wife, in case someone decided they can't wait and just has to pull out in front of her to save a few seconds, she will be bigger and better protected then most things out there.
Maybe going this big isn't the best reaction, but its not my first reaction I have thought about it. Her accident was 6 months ago. Its going to be her ride... so its gonna stay low and have all the fixins to make it hers, step boards and such.
Basically, If I'm not towing and shes just gonna be driving it around town is the gas engine going to do.
I want a tank...

get the 6.0l diesel great damn engine, the excursions are very nice, comes with a 44 gallon tank, and if she drives it easy she can get over 600 miles on a tank, plus with a few little extra's she can get more power and better mileage, i have a soft spot for excursions...its like with any vehicle, if you treat it good, it will treat you good, you can only get used tho, 05 was the last year they were made. there great for the family, huge inside and super comfortable.
thats our excursion (our meaning my family) but my mom usually drives it, ive done a good bit of stereo equipment into hers, its an 05 eddie bauer, only difference between limited and eddie is the 2 tone eddie has which we like. its got a 6" fabtech lift on 35" toyo at tires, and a k&n cold air intake, runs like a champ dont hesitate to get one

I don't blame you, I'm looking for a very large vehicle that my girlfriend and the kids can ride in so they will be safer. At least I've got her driving the Blazer while her Taurus is down.
I don't know diesels so I stay away from them. The fuel system is under extremely high pressures, I think around 10,000 PSI which makes it tough to work on. The fuel is injected into the cylinder during compression which is why it must be very high pressure. There's the bonus of the torque for pulling, and the better fuel economy when driven right. Plus you can use bio-diesel without major modifications, and you can make it yourself for cheap.

I know used is the only option...
I know the 6.0 is a good motor, but what size is the V10?
The fiance may be somewhat handicapped if she is able to drive. Do you think it would be to much for her? I have never driven on before and I drive fire trucks so my big and hard to handle isn't the same as other peoples.

the 6.0 has more power than the v10 imo, but its usable power, if you have a load in it the v10 is a little sluggish if you go to pass someone, where as the torque from the 6.0 keeps you goin with no hesitation, she will have to get used to the turbo tho, it takes a little while to get used to but for a rig like that i would only go diesel

I understand that the Diesel is a bad mother. But for lack of a better term would a "soccer mom" really benefit from the power, seeing as shes not towing and I don't ever plan on having 6 kids that weigh 400lbs apiece...lol

Drove a Deuce and a half for Hurricane's Katrina and Gustav... and a semi truck and trailer with a dozer on it.
Only thing is, at this point in her recovery she doesn't remember that.
It may come back or it may not. We aren't sure at this point. Shes slowly getting better and I hope at one some point she is able to have a normal life. I'm not making this purchase any time soon. Just wanting to get some more opinions on it for the always hopeful future.
