Default 77 f150 dies randomly

I have 77 f150 that dies randomly when driving. I can usually get it to start back up after a few tries. I have replace the fuel filter and the coil is about 4 years old. Any ideas. Thank you.

Fuel pump. After awhile the diaphram gets crusty. Especially if it is original. Not used to Ethanol. It will go pretty fast.

Didnt mention engine or 4X4 but I used the middle of the road on Rock Auto, less than $20.

So I know it been a few months but the engine 351W out of a 78 cougar. I have replaced the fuel pump, ignition control module, distibutor cap and rotor. The truck still will die randomly. Any thoughts?

I believe the ignition switch was the same for the entire generation of those trucks. Pull the back of the ignition switch (the electrical plug) and look to see if there's any loose or corroded wires. Might be the ignition itself if it's the original. I had to replace the one in my 73 when I was in high school for a similar problem. Before you buy anything look at your wiring. I know there's a fuseable link that has to do with the ignition system, but I can't remember where exactly. It's been many moons since I had an older truck like that to work on.

I had a 1975 International pickup truck I bought new with the 345 V8 and the symptoms you describe on your truck was the beginning failure of the early electronic ignition control modules. I didn't have Fords back then, but the symptoms sound the same and the technology was about the same vintage. The truck would randomly leave me stranded along side of the road, and sometimes fire right up and other times would take hours before it would restart. I could drive for weeks with no trouble, but other days it would die suddenly 3 or 4 times a day. Replacement is the only fix.

Rebuild the carb? Can't hurt. Float could be going bad among other issues, there's so many small passages in there that can get clogged up.
