Post my 1986 f150 thoughts for new motor.

i am thinking about either rebuilding the current tired 302 or buying a new motor. currently its a 302 EFI, c6 auto 2wd truck with 250000 kms on it, im looking for ideas about what i should do, i dont want to change it to a manual trans, i will just rebuild the trans. im not sure if i want to keep it EFI or change to carb, i was thinking 331 stroker with a lumpy cam i want that borg out kind of sound like an old big block muscle car. i just need something that sounds bad ***,

if you guys could give me some ideas, i dont need big power, cuz im not looking to wrap myself around a tree

thanks

If you don't have to smog your truck where you are I would strip the motor down to bare minimum, toss all the smog crap in the trash. Crate motor vs rebuild depends on your budget. But if you want a classic sound with more than stock power-
1-new engine with edelbrock performer intake cam and 600cfm carb.
2- headers - hooker makes nice headers for your $$ for older trucks.
3- 2" dual exhaust with series 40 flowmaster mufflers.
4- after market electronic ignition. Since your not going for "raced out", Petronix will probably have a conversion kit for your distributor so you can ditch the oem ignition box. Usually about $75 for the kit and $100 for the coil ( if you need it)

Default Wish I had your 302 EFI and C6 trans!

My 1984 Ford 302 with carb and 4X4 with three speed auto could stand the EFI. But, here in CA it would have to include all the parts and stickers for the emission. This truck has the CA feed back solenoid and all those sensors. It all works and passed the smog test with very low numbers last April with 122K miles.

We still have to smog our cars/trucks every two years and they do a good visual inspection.

It was a while ago so not sure you're active anymore but do you still have this truck? Please email me at noelepoirier@gmail.com
