Default 1984 f150 with a 71 460

MY buddy has. 1984 ford with a 71 460 he just bought it and it's kinda of a hack job but we got it to start once and then it never did it has spark we have the right firing order but when you crank it like to shoot gas out of the carb we know the timings out but we just want it to run before we start throwing it way out of wack any help would be appreciated

Shooting gas out of the carb suggests the piston is pushing air up through the intake. I'm thinking an intake valve is open under upward stroke. Use a compression tester on the spark plug holes and see which one is low to know where to look for problems.

Simple timing issue shouldn't cause this... if the spark happens when the intake valve is still open, you'll get backfire through the carb, not just gas/air being pushed out.

Things that could cause this:
  • Broken spring?
  • Misaligned crank/cam
  • Damaged valve (stretched/broken/seat/etc)
  • ???
