Meantime, you could just put smaller jets in that carb, that would help a lot. It's extremely simple to change the jets in a holley 4v. Extremely simple.

On Saturday I replaced the old carb with a new Holley Model 4160, 750 cfm, Square Bore, Manual Choke, 4-Barrel, Vacuum, Dual Inlet carburetor. The installation went very smooth, and the engine fired right up. The only adjustment I made was to take the idle down a bit. I have driven the truck 25 miles or so around town and so far so good.

Still much too big a carb. I wouldn't expect much improvement in fuel economy.
