Hi Guys
When I bought my 05 F150,ive always stayed with synthetic.I want longevity in my engine.Guess regular oil is ok if changed every 3K miles.Everyone has their own opinion&preference..Regards...Pete

Using a synthetic in an older engine could caus the oil to weep past it's seals, but this really depends more upon the condition of the motor than the kind of oil. I have 200K on my 97 and I stick with what the dealer recommends. Hell, they built it so who knows better than they do? One thing that I did do was to purchase a rare earth magnet (just a really strong magnet) and I stick it right on the drain plug to pull any metal shavings out when I drain it. The magnet stays on even when I am driving and I do not use it to really clean the oil, but more to let me know if anything in the engine is breaking down. If you get any metal on the drain plug, then you have something to worry about, if not, then you don't.

I think that the idea of using a magnet as a means of
monitoring the engine wear is a valid means, to a point.
Considering that the bearing materials are generally some
sort of alloy, the pistons Aluminum, as are most ofher parts.
the actual amount of Iron and Steel in the engine is somewhat limited.
As such, I question how good an indicator of engine condition the
magnet may be.
However, I am of the opinion that having a magnet in the automatic
transmission would provide more information as to how the unit is wearing.
Comments ( friendly or otherwise ) please.

Maybe you are correct on that KAH. It was an old trick taught to me by my grandfather and could have been more practical in the older days, but after 200K I have never found anything on the magnet on my truck either.

TRANSMASTER: I did just that and everything went
well. Thanks for the help.
Seems like the synthetics are not that much more
expensive than the old style oils. I used Pennzoil
Platinum ( on sale ) and the price was very close.
