Cool that you guys are getting the 3.5 NA - it seems to be the forgotten engine just as the 3.7L was last time. I would think it would be plenty good on a supercab 4x4 and lighter. If any of you guys got the 36 gal tank, please most your "most miles to empty" for comparison on this link:

Default Getting 3.5

picking up 3.5 crew cab 4x4 next week with 3.73 gears. My new commuter truck. Old 06 FX4 has 300,000 miles and is perfect so will have a backup truck to use for heavy use and snowplowing. Test drove before buying and showed 28mpg on highway. Could not get v6 in 4x4 crew cab before 2015. 36 gallon tank with good mileage will be cool. Ethanol capability is a plus. Ran my 06 on ethanol 50% of time without issues. Only one I found that wasn't a XL. This one is XLT with decent options. Simple, efficient, and no rust aluminum body. Will report back in a month after 3000 miles. -- first day, Chicago commuting early morning traffic 26mpg saw 31 average for a while then settled at 25mpg. This truck does not have the low end grunt of my 5.4 with the same gears but is more than capable for my needs. Sport mode for the transmission changes the truck completely at low speeds. If you let it wind up a little it pulls just fine. I will hook up a 2 axle uhaul to teach my daughter trailer backing after 1000 miles and we will see what happens.

Running ethanol in 3.5na now to see what changes. So far it has more low end grunt and seems like an increase in power. Fuel range dropped from 780 to 650 within about 10 miles. I did not see the mpg drop that much but maybe it changes the range when it detects ethanol content. I don't know. Have 2000 miles on it now. 19mpg average with a lot of city and still get 25 on highway sometimes better even with 3.73 gears. It has plenty of power when needed if you let it turn above 3000 rpm when accelerating or passing. Will go to 7000 rpm quickly. Changed oil at 1000 to 5-30 full synthetic. I know it should take 5-20 but 5-30 has proven itself in all of my trucks that required 5-20. I have some 5.4's with 400,000 miles and no oil consumption and operate in winters below negative 15 degrees. Still have to hook up a trailer and see how it pulls. A couple of days later now and ran out most of the ethanol tank. Filled up with normal gas and after about 5 miles the distance to empty changed from 680 to 750 so it must read ethanol content somehow and not go just by recent mpg is my guess. It did seem to have a little less power with just gas. On ethanol average mpg was dropping to 18.0 mostly city. Back on gas it has been rising again to 21+ city driving. I will probably run just e-85 after this since it is only about $2.00 gal right now and gas was $3.15. I don't think the 3.5na has the fake engine noise through the radio that I read about with the other engines. Another puzzle to figure out.

Now at 3000 miles. I have been impressed with this engine. Played with different fuels and it seems to get the best mileage on mid grade 89 octane. Drove 300 miles yesterday and dash said I still had 500 miles to empty with 36 gallon tank. Has good power between 2000 and 3500 rpm. Engine is very quiet. A/C is excellent. Flipped tires around to blackwall and had to visit the dealer to reset tire monitors since the truck now uses a different valve stem transmitter that is not in the tire shop's tire reset tool yet. Running 5-30 instead of 5-20 and don't see any difference in mileage. I have no regrets with this engine. Runs above 80mph on highway no problem and does not struggle to get there either. Passing power is fine if you let it run above 4000 rpm. Showing 22mpg mixed driving

Put a trailer behind it. It was just a U-Haul 5x8 to teach my daughter trailer backing. Pulled without issues. You did know it was back there due to the higher shift points. This engine won't be pulling Bobcats or Airstreams like the 5.0 or turbo 3.5 might, but for the occasional trailer, no problems. The lane change signal changes from 3 flashes to 5 flashes with a trailer attached. Mileage dropped to 15. It really is nice to go days and days without stopping for gas. I would be on E in 3 days with the 5.4. Now I could go 8 days. Next challenge is to see how far empty is from 0 miles to empty. Putting a 5 gallon can in back and run it out. Everything is guessing until somebody does it.

I have a 3.5 NA super cab 2wd with 3.55... I've got a little over 2,000 miles on it now. Bass boat is behind it 2-3 times a week minimum. I'm getting over 20mpg with the boat behind it. 18 city and up to 26mpg on the highway depending on speed/traffic. I haven't taken it on any long trips yet.

This truck replaced a 2002 F250 5.4 super cab 4wd with 4.30's and 35/12.50 tires. 8mpg in the winter, 10mpg in the summer.

5500 miles now. This truck does everything I need without any regrets on power. Filled up shows 790 miles to empty. Drove from Chicago to Tuscaloosa, AL getting 22mpg at speeds in excess of 80. Made it using exactly 36 gallons of gas. In theory I could have made it with one tank. Hauled 4 people, luggage, and my tools and generator that are always in the truck. Pulled long grades fine after downshifting one and sometimes 2 gears. Never had a problem maintaining any speed I desired even 80+ on long upgrades. Even then never had to wind above 4000 rpm. 99 degrees in Alabama and AC worked fine. I think the engine fan has two speeds because they were louder in traffic at nealy 100 degrees. Fuel range is incredible.

I still don't have my RC 3.5. Supposedly next month it's coming.

I drove an XLT crew cab with the 3.5 recently. I felt it was just a little slow for my taste, but still adequate to move the truck.

I'm still thinking I will be right and in my lighter RC with better gears it will be fine for me.

3.73 gears are a must with 3.5na, the motor has to wind a little to get to the power. It takes some getting used to before you get comfortable with it.
