By looking at the photo, I would strongly believe this separation happened as the result of a jaws of life, or other device after the accident.
If the split happened during the accident, I doubt the side would be split in such a clean manner. The door isn't structurally able to hold the side together that well, it would have crumpled and twisted as the accident happened...
