I'd look into one if it came with a V8 option. 4600 pounds though, wow. That is friggin light

Zero chance it will be that light. The article is click bait, nothing more. Ford said to expect an average of 700lbs lost. A 4600lb Raptor would have lost 1600lbs.

My guess is some lost from going to Eco and some lost due to aluminum cab structure and bed - the front is all composite already. 700lbs at most, given that it is a highly option variant in addition to the already heavy chassis.

I wouldn't be surprised if the raptor had the 2.7l as a option since they put it in the BAJA....2.7 extended cab probably could come close to 4600Lb since a crew cab with 2.7L weighs about that.

The only reference I could find at that weight is a motortrend article stating that a base model 2x4 screw could weigh in at 44xxlbs - similar '14 models were around 5,200lbs. Close to the aforementioned 700lb mark.

Raptors will be highly optioned, 4x4, and will most likely come with a 'special' 3.5 Eco - a tune and maybe larger charge piping and FMIC.

They very well could make both Eco powerplants an option but neither would have much impact on weight (100-150lbs) and there would have to be a significant price difference or folks will default to the 3.5.

Remember, the only reason the first half of
2010's had 5.4's was because the 6.2 wasn't ready for prime time. It was a planning error.

In any case, the suspension, running gear and tires are what make the Raptor so heavy. I am of the opinion that if they get anywhere near 5000lbs it will be something short of a miracle.

Gen 1 raptor scab = 6000lbs
Gen 1 raptor screw = 6200lbs

All front end bodywork is already composite so we are only talking about cab and bed weight.

Not trying to be argumentative, I just don't see that much fat to be trimmed.

The 2016 Raptor is going to have a highly tuned 5.0 similar to the Mustang. I would take that to the bank.

With respect:

The 2016 Mustang engine has less torque than the outgoing 6.2 and only 9 more hp - with the worst torque curve of the options (2.7, 3.5, 5.0)

Rather than use an engine already proven in Baja, Ford is to forego its premium engine and use it's #2?

The guys on the Raptor Forum that work for Ford say it's an Eco.

Jamal Hameedi and other SVT engineers spent some time with SDHQ crawling around the Eco Raptor and taking notes.

The 3.5TT and the 2.7TT are the only engines left in the lineup tested in Baja.

I don't see Ford releasing a flagship vehicle with less power than GMs 6.2 - even with the weight reduction.

You might be 100% correct, however I've seen several 'hints' leaning towards the 3.5TT and you are the only person stating 5.0.

I'll wager a crisp clean $1 bill it's an Eco. Yes, one whole dollar, American.
