Default 2.7 mpg/performance

ill try to report back here with mpg of my 2.7 periodically to see if this engine is as capable, if not more, than claimed. i have a 4 door with a 5.5 box and the extened 36 gal tank (i love it) will be adding a truxedo cover and bed exteneder, i dont think it will make a difference mpg wise. its a XLT with 4x4 with stock tires. as of right now i wont be adding any mods. the only think i may add is a k&n air intake or maybe just swap the filter to a k&n filter. havnt decided yet.

as of right now im just shy of 1100 miles averaging 19 mpg on this tank. i drive about 15.5 miles to work about half the month and 13 to the gym (so 31 round trip for work and 26 round trip to gym) a few inclined hills here and there. also its the winter months right now and my garage isnt heated so every morning i let it warm up at minimum 10 min. even after getting off work ill let it warm up. so the 19 mpg also takes into account the truck sitting there and idling for 10 plus minutes to warm up some.

going to work i hit 2 stop signs, and drive through 1 small town. otherwise its 55 the rest of the way. the gym is pretty much the same except ill hit a few more stop lights for the 2 miles im driving in town. this is about 80% of my driving, even going into town im hitting the same streches of highway. ill try to be as detailed as i can, i hope others would do the same, so we get an idea of what this puppy can really do.

so far im pretty impressed. i had a 09 5.4 that averanged less than what im getting now and that had a k&n air intake on it. typically about 3 mpg less then what im getting in the 15 and the motor isnt broken in yet. i got 23.4 on the way back from the inlaws house with uner 1000 miles on it and i was breaking in the engine according to what it says in the manual.

i dont expect to see good mileage untill about 3 to 5000 miles. my 09 jumped in mpg at about the 4000 mark and the same goes for the old lady's car when we bought that new. she was mad at first because she was getting around 17 mpg when it was rated for like 26 until i told her to give it a few thousand. sure enough it got better.

im getting better mpg than i thought i would right now, due to it being new and being cold and letting the engine idle to warm up. so far so good. hopfully other 2.7 owners chip in with what they get.

MPGs don't drastically change. I shutter to think what kind of mpgs you're going to get when or if you tow something over 4k lbs.

I'm sorry man, I just don't get the draw to EB? You could have got a 5.0 which would give you better power, same mpgs, better sound, you wouldn't have to worry about keeping your foot out of it to keep turboes from sucking fuel, you'd be able to tow more efficiently...it just makes more sense. The 2.7 is a real head scratcher to me.

But good luck with it. Let us know how it goes. It will be good to know.
Why do you feel the need to **** in other peoples threads with your propaganda. I, like others, would like to know more about the potential of this motor. Thanks to the OP for sharing.

Thanks for the detailed information. I was considering this engine but a few of the options i wanted were not available.

As of right now, I have 580 miles on a 4x4 Lariat SCrew with a 3.5LEB. I'm currently getting between 16.4-17.2. My driving is pretty much back and forth to work. I let it warm up for about 5 minutes (I have the remote start set to turn off after 5 minutes and I usually get out there before it turns off). I hit 3 stop lights a mile apart with a speed limit of about 55 between them, then it's Interstate/HWY the rest of the way. I'm hoping that after the break-in period and with gas changing to a different blend around the same time I hit break-in mileage, it will jump up a bit. Rated for 17-24. I'll literally **** my pants if I ever get 22+mpg in a full size pickup. Not that I don't expect it to perform close to what it was rated, but when you think about the power of the engine and the weight of the truck, it's pretty phenomenal. I had a Tacoma before this truck and at best I'd hit 18-19 and that was when I was conscious of trying to get better mileage.

I know, different engine than yours and probably belongs somewhere else but I liked your information so I decided to share mine.

The GMC 6.2 eight speed has more hp and torque than eb 3.5 and is getting as good mpg. I was hoping the 3.5 eb in the lighter truck would be getting better mpg.

I would be interested in your long term info also for I ordered the 3.5 EB. I did want to know how the 2.7 does comparted to their EPA quotes.

Most places that have a winter mix due change by the calender rather than the actual temperatures.

yes, get this 3.5 junk out of here. just kiddin not bad. its still new. like i said, in the last 2 new vehicles i had we didnt see good mpg till about 4000ish miles, or at least what it was rated for. so the auto start has a timer? what is it defauled to turn off? how do you set it? i was unaware of that feature.

Good report and thanks for the feedback. Those are pretty good numbers IMO for a 4x4 screw.

In the 8" Productivity screen there is an option called "Settings". I think there are two different sizes or types of productivity screens but for mine its:

Settings>Advanced Settings>Vehicle>Remote Start>Duration- 5,10,15 minutes
You can also set up the climate control/heated seats as well. Makes for a toasty truck on cold mornings.

I agree with the 4000-6000 mile range. My wife's vehicle (14' MDX) was rated for 21-28. We were getting 23 at best for a while then all of a sudden we were getting 28-30 consistently (highway, 24-25 mix). I really hope mine increases.

As for the poster who said a 6.2L V8 Chevy/GM gets the same- A Honda Civic gets better, but yes I agree- you'd think it would get better, even with a 3.55 rear end.
