Are the 5.4l engines as bad as these forums make them sound?

Great looking truck.
You'll enjoy the truck and the BedRug.
For me the BedRug is 2nd only to the Edge Evo tuner as far as practical mods go.

The timing chains or the teeth are breaking over 100k. It appears to be design problem. Our shop gets one in every few months from the extended warranted company referrals. The dealers are pulling the cabs to replace the motors they find it faster. We are not that brave. They aren't nearly as frequent as the Hemi problems. You can't even find a used one from the junkyard. They are popping like the 4th of July. I have 80k on 2010 FX4 with no problems but I won't be shocked when it happens.

Truck is at the dealership today. She getting a new engine under warranty. Thank God I got that warranty. I've had it less than 2 weeks.

So I guess that shows that good maintenance won't save these 5.4's! Sorry you got a dud. Did things go well with truck during repair process and after? running good now?

Truck runs smooth now. Overall I'd say I'm pleased. Dealership took good care of me.

Glad to hear, sounds like they took good care of you!
I'm facing an engine replacement, no warranty though! They don't give these 5.4 3v engines away! Sucks i can't find a different engine that could be a direct replacement. But if I go with a reman it will be good as long as I want it anyway

They aren't 100% sure. once they found metal shavings, they decided it was time to replace. So they didn't dig all the way into the engine.
I drove it to Ft Myers that day. (200 miles one way) and I noticed it would stutter between 40 and 55. Felt like it was missing when I would go to pass someone at those speeds. When I got home, my wife noticed a rattling sound. I thought it might have been a cat, but the muffler guy down the street said it was in the engine or tranny.
The dealership pulled the trans pan and checked the filter, but that was fine. So then they took off the oil filter and cut it open. They found metal shavings in it, and there was metal in the oil pan, which was the rattling I heard. They also pulled the valve cover in the passenger side and found metal shavings there.
They speculated that the oil pump was going bad. It wasn't an issue with normal driving. But on that trip, I had to pass over the Skyway bridge, which connects St Petersburg with Manatee county. Very long and steep bridge. It's tall enough for cruise ships to go under. They think that when I climbed that bridge, first thing in the morning, the pump wasn't working well enough and starved the engine of oil. The bridge was within the 1st 20 minutes of that 2 hour drive, and then again in the last 20 minutes of the return trip.
