Default What has the PO done to the Rear Suspension

95 i6 4wd manual.

It is time to focus on getting the suspension sorted out. The front is straight forward (replace shocks).

The back....there is this:

What did the PO do?

That's a coil over shock. Uses the shock mounts to pick up some of the weight. Not as good as stronger springs - hard on the shock mounts, they're not really made for that.

What about the exhaust clamps they have attached to them?

Can I take those off?

That will release the spring. If you don't need them don't put them back. They're not a good idea as stated above.

take those off and put some new shocks on. If you need more load capacities then ditch the rear factory blocks and put f250 springs on it.

Those are not standard coil overs. Never seen a set with pipe clamps on them. Looks like the PO purchased no adjustable coil overs and modified them. I run coil overs on my Silverado for towing my travel trailer with no issues, but the shock mounts are very beefy and I'm not off roading either. If I was going to run them on my 150, I'd weld in gussets on each side of the shock mounts top and bottom, but like was said, it's easier to do put heavy duty 250 springs in.

I had that setup on the rear of a 69 VW Beetle back around 71-72 when I was in High School so I could run wheel adapters with Chevelle SS's/G60-14'S. Removed them when I put flared fiberglass fenders on it.
As recommended, IF you need extra weight capability, since yours is a 4x4, just put F250 springs on it. Direct fit but it'll ride like a two horse wagon.
