And I quote:
API claims that 9.2 million people are employed in this way (oil industry in US). Well, the Checks and Balances Project ran the numbers and came up with a far less expansive and far less rosy picture of the oil and gas industry.
40% of Oil Industry Jobs Are Minimum Wage
Based on data from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, Check and Balances Project points out that there are actually only 2.2 million oil and gas industry jobs in the United States--and 40% of all these are actually minimum wage jobs at gas stations.

So regardless of who is producing the oil (40% of 2.2m=) 880,000 of the 2.2 million that work in oil will still have jobs. Maybe the other 1.32 million could look for a job? or become self employed (like me). Either way US has 314,000,000 residents, if 1,320,000 have to look for different jobs to benefit 312,680,000, then yes they can find/create opportunity. That is less than 0.45% of the population. Now this math is assuming that all of the people currently working in the oil industry will be let go, fact is they won't , some may be laid of because of slowed production but the majority will probably retain employment.

If you factor in the total population and oil industry of North America the % working in oil will drop even further, it may seem like a big industry because "everything is bigger in texas" or because you are around it everyday but the fact is the oil industry benefits a tiny percentage of the population. *(benefits as in employs because almost everyone needs gas)

do you have any idea the number your throwing out there though? over two million people?? and yes they could look to get another job and most will but I don't think your understanding if that many people drop out of the tax bracket at one time and get on unemployment for lets say it takes a month to find a job how much of a drain that's gonna be on the economy I cant believe your willing to lay off 2.2 million people for a cheaper price at the pump, and yes just because you making min wage your still getting laid off, im not sure why you didn't lay off the min wage people but you say its only .45 of the pop? whats the percent of the actual working pop because theres far less people working than are here in some states theres less working than that are working, I understand you think think that lower gas will stimulate the economy but your taking to many people outta the tax bracket and putting them on gov assistance when were already going bankrupt as it is

The benefit of oil production happening in North America goes beyond just the jobs in the field. Oil is the life blood of the world and because of that there won't be a glut forever. But the glut might last awhile and if you work in the oil industry you have to plan for that.

You act as if unemployment is taken out of the tax dollars that we could be spending on schools, improvements, etc..., it's not. UE is a separate tax paid by employers specifically for the purpose of paying people who don't have a job. Only 1.32 million actually work in the oil industry as something other than a clerk at a gas station or the like.

I'm not trying to say I think people should be laid off, just that buying oil at the cheaper price is best for everyone, including those in the oil industry because regardless of when they harvest the resource there is only a finite amount to be harvested. Why not buy it cheap from other places and slow production here, then when the "cheap" oil either goes up in price or is depleted then resume production at an increased profit.

BTW if everyone, 314 million Americans, saved $30 a month on gas for one year that would be a savings of $113,040,000,000. I know not everyone has a car to fill up but the amount of gas savings by the businesses should average it back out. This isn't even factoring in the savings for the government on all of there gas vehicles (cop cars, ambulances, hummers, jeeps, government cars for public offices, etc...). I know a Marine Recruiter that puts close to 50 gallons a week in his car, paid by government, he is only one of 32 recruiters in Iowa just for the Marines, you start taking in every branch of service, every state, throw in the smaller trucks the fire dept. uses (not actual firetrucks but service vehicles and station trucks) along with city maintenance vehicles, etc...

Trust me when I tell you that the benefit is greater for the masses with cheaper gas. Not trying to be rude with this, but : What are these people going to do when we run out of oil? They are working in a limited life field, much like a pro athlete, they know the time will eventually come when they are out of a job and need to plan. Will it happen in my lifetime, maybe, the number of vehicles on the road grows every year so it's hard to figure.

Edit: I guess there are only 32 recruiters in Iowa so the above number was changed

Let's get this thing back on track.

I got my '92 back yesterday after it finally passed inspection. Before the inspection I had replaced the core support, ball joints, brakes (front and rear), front bearings, front body mounts and a sh*t ton of other stuff. Feels like I have a brand new truck now

Except of course for the 6 months or so of green-buildup that I had to powerwash off, boy was that thing dirty

there is no shortage on oil http://www.nationaljournal.com/daily...ought-20130430
and that's not the argument that's needing to be made because that's been proven, and your right so when they stop working they stop paying for those who live off the government and then become the people who are taking the money from the government and you cant say the total pop is buy gas because ALOT of people do not drive like children? elderly? mentally disabled, and people in big cites like new York who walk or transit every where, its not good to take that amount of people out of the work force period and it would not be beneficial no matter how you look at it, im not saying I want it at 3.50 a gallon but at 2.50 are you rerally being pinched that bad?

Installed my Rough Country LED light bar (20") Swapped the factory 5.0L license plate mount for the Eco Boost side mount and did a little modifying to the plastic blocks for a cleaner look.
