Default Transmission Leak Top cover

Whats the best way about checking and changing the plugs on the top cover of the M5r2 tranny? I have a bad leak. I want to change them without removing the top cover, has anyone ever done that. Do you the rubber expansion plugs will be a good choice? Does anyone have pictures of this job? Thanks! I need my truck back ASAP.

What year is your truck? I had a 92 F150 with the Mazda 5 speed manual and it had the 3 rubber "shift rail plugs" along the rear top of the trans that I knocked loose when I pulled out my trans to do a clutch. I couldn't get any replacement plugs so I just popped mine out, put rubber sealant around them and popped them back in. Never had a problem with leaks again. If you need to replace yours because of dry rot you will need to buy them from Ford. They're 67 cents a piece or more than likely Ford will make you buy a bag of them for $20. I have pics I will post later when I get home.

Best way is to remove the top cover through the hole in the floor. Peel back the carpet and remove the access plate. Most use 5/8 brass plugs instead of the crappy rubber plugs. Otherwise sealer on the rubber ones while reaching over the transmission is an alright half as$ed fix.

Hopefully I still have the pics but you have the same exact truck my old 92 then. The plugs should look like these: http://media.photobucket.com/image/f..._3718Small.jpg

You can remove these plugs without taking the cover or anything off. Take a flat head screw driver and you should see the plugs at the top rear of the trans. They can be stubborn sometimes but they just pop right out. Whether you put new ones in or not I'd still get some rubber sealant and coat them good before popping them in.

Edit: or you could also use brass plugs like other guy said and that will work even better.

Sean, so 5/8" brass freeze plugs, and some indian head?? I am double checking the 5/8th size with you because some people state that the 5/8" is too small.
